Holy cow Dave!! (or should I say Holy Roo?!?!) Now that's a lot of shooting.  I'd say you've earned a nice weekend doing whatever you want. (ok, we all know it's actually whatever the wife wants!)

I would love to go on one of your hunts with ya, I think it would be both fun and educational.

Eric if you ever make it over here ! I'll gladly take you out for a night .Belive it or not ,I compare my Job with working in a mobile slaughter house . I've been shooting proffestionaly for near 40yrs now & to me it's just another day (or night in the Office)

I've had a callus on my shoulder for more years than I would care to remember & the scars of  a number of encounters with nasties that went Horribly wrong through miss fires & stupidity on my part!

Every shot I miss is costing me money ! It's very rarely I take a shot over 200mtrs  (180 yrds ) There are a lot of young blokes in theTrade who shoot  way out to around 500mtrs ! I'm Buggered if I can even see that  far these days

On the upside I'm my own Boss& am not limited to the hours I work or more importantly ,I have a Free hand to shoot where I want on any of the Properties I shoot on !

Someday I plan on making it to Australia.  It may have to wait until I get my dream vacation out of the way though.  I want to take about 1-2 months to follow the path that my grandfather took in WWII. From storming the beaches at Fedala N. Africa, to the final shots in Germany.  The wife wasn't real excited about it, but once I told her we could stop and shop along the way, well, let's just say she's MUCH more excited about it now!

They landed all across the northern coast.  It just depends on which division went where.  I know the 3rd ID landed at Fedala, not only from what my grandfather told me, but I also have the first pulication (1947 I think) of "The Third Infantry Division in WWII" printed by the military press.

Here's a site that has a quickie note on the 3rd ID in WWII.

http://www.lonesentry.com/usdivisions/history/infantry/divis ion/3rd_infantry_division.html

Look under "Combat Chronicle" it gives a quick synopsis.

Another more in-depth read: http://www.lonesentry.com/gi_stories_booklets/3rdinfantry/in dex.html

Hey, Eric thats the same Division I was in when i was stationed in Germany, what unit was your grandad in? mine was 1st of the 4th then 4th o the 7th Cotten Bailers By God! with a salute.  then I was transfered state side to the 24th Infantry Division
at Ft. Stewart Ga.  the town our kasern was in in Germany was Aushaffenburg, man I miss the beer over there.
Now the 3rd I.D. is in Iraq my Buddy is with them up in Erbil his last job he wrote me about was working with the special forces training the local police force and there SWAT teams, I just seen his truck on the way in from work erlyer so he should drop by in a little while to visite while he's home on leave. that kid is like a sone to me, before he left he spent most of his time over hear hunting and fishing with me or just hanging out , most of the time he would sleep over everyone thought he was my son.   The "White Rhino"

All I know so far is that he was in the 15 infantry regmt. of the 3rd infantry div. I'm still reading up on what all he did. I know he was wounded 3 times and never received a PH. That in itself kinda pi$$es me off with John Kerry and his lame-a$$ excuse for PH's! He received a few medals, but he unfortunately died about 4 months after he started telling me about his service.

I am making a trip up to washington this month to visit my grandmother and get some of my grandfathers military memorabilia. He died 3 years ago and left anything military related to me. I was the only one EVER interested in his service.  I would call him and every other vet in my family and say thanks on veterans day, as well as always telling him hhow much he meant to me on a regular occasion. I couldn't bring myself to get the stuff he left me because I didn't want to take anything from my grandma. I talked to her on my birthday in May and she wanted to know when I was going to finally take all the "crap" that grandpa left me!! It was at that point I realized that just maybe it meant more to me than to grandma!!  So, I'll get it this month.

It just dawned on me, he must have been in 1st battalion, as he was in the same battalion as Audie Murphy. I think Murphy was in company k.  My grandfather was in G company.  He said he knew murphy, but didn't care too much for him. I don't know why, he wouldn't expand.

Hey Eric - my Grandma was the same way. When my Grandfather died, she TOSSED all his military related items, including his papers.
He served between the wars - but nonetheless served.(He woulda bin there if the crap hit the fan.)
Had a bitch of a time getting his service #'s etc out of DND records.Said they'd bin destroyed.(That cant be true - cause it's against federal law to destroy Canadian federal historic documents.) Even the Legion was havin a hard time, on my behalf.(& no-one @ his regiment had records that far back - Simcoe-Greys)
The break came when my father noticed that our correspondance was with the dept @ Tunney's Pasture, in Ottawa.Well, Grandpa was Chief @ station there! (Stationary engineer of plant). He was there for 8 or more years till he was little over 70.(Those jobs are only filled by ex-service people). He missed "service" in WWII cause he was sailing.(Good thing, too.Cause I might not be here now, talkin @ ya!!)
All I have now, is a picture (that Gramma tore-& I "fixed", & copied) of him with his platoon @ Sarawak Camp, after they won some kind of cup/award. What a shame.(But he looks happy in the picture!)

Man Eric, 15th infantry starts my mind to running in cicles for some reason that sounds familiar to me and while im writing this 3rd of the 15th comes to mind,
when i first got to Fort stewart that was my units designation, then it was retierd and we became 4th infantry 7th battalion (Cotton Baylers) I'm related to one of the Colonels of the 7th infantry through my Grandmothers side of famaly,He went on to become one of our presadents (Andrew Jackson) Its not direct, its by a cousine of one of my great, great.. Grandmothers. some day i need to sit at this computer and
go through the disc my sister gave me with all the lineage back to the old world.
well my Wife just got home and my new scale came in its small about the size of a pack of cigarets, so im of to weigh some powder for reloading.

Yeah Mate sure was ! Hey tell Mum to take a Number ! I'm on that many Hate lists I get someone else to start my car of a morning & any parcels that turn up for me I send straight to the Bomb squad ! I fire up to 15000 shots a year through work alone  which amounts to a average of roughly 13000 roos per year  (when my dear friends in the Dept of National Parks & wild life issue me with enough Tags ) The last couple of years have been hard as they only issue me with 700 tags at a time! Due to a 30% reduction  in quotas  due to the drought ! They figure it's better to let Roos die of thirst & starvation rather than let their Numbers be culled !  I know people will look at these numbers & think that I'm into full scale massicare  but in reality  I shoot over several thousand square Kms  on about 20 Properties & stations  (ranches ) & work long hours  to reach my quotas !  ( I work on 1.2 tonne per night )
