Coast watchers !

   Listened to a interesting interview ,with a chap who was a coast watcher in Papua during WW2! tonight on the radio . He was mostly on his own for the better part of two years ! The interviewer asked him if during this time he'd ever seen any japanise (the reply was priceless ) Yes he said ,the only ones I ever saw were about 350 that landed ! The interviewer at this tage says to the bloke .....did you attack them ? The answer was ....Mate I only had 30rnds of ammo! I reckon they had me out numbered !He as it turns out called in a Air strike of Kitty Hawkes

	Thats one of the "perks" I've had over the years of my membership in legion.Talking to the ment that were there is an absolute priceless gift.Sadly - so many are now gone, & they're stories with them. All the WWI vets I talked to years ago are long gone now. Its sad..makes me think of my own mortality sometimes. Hoadie

	the legends die but the memories will live on forever through all up and coming generations.Ill be sure to tell kobi when shes older of the very limited stories my grandad told me about his service in the Navy.

	I think I am lucky, I'm 36 and my Dad is 83 (yes, it is possible LOL). He served in the US Navy as a gunner in a TBM Avenger in the Pacific Theatre. So growing up I knew a lot of WWII Veterans, they are a great lot. Actually I think all Veterans in general are great people. I think that me having parents from the WWII Generation had a lot with me going into the Service myself. Most of the people I grew up with had parents that were much younger, looking back I think I had it better in some ways by having older parents. Mark

	Thats when I miss my old man! He used to chat about life as a desert rat (151 Infantry brigade 50th Division) . Some of the antics they got up to as POWs was both funny and amazing. How they didn't get shot is beyond me!

	My father served in the Army during during Korean Conflict and part of Cold War In West germany. Plotting Targets in East Germany. He was in Artillery. Most of his targets that were in the Eastern Block countries are still classified and cannot speak of them. But the stories I heard as a youth while they were drinking beer are spine chilling. CM

	Yeah I must admit,as a kid growing up most of our Family on both sides had served in either The Army or Navy in the various theatres of WW2 . I had one Great Uncle who was the Head Mechanic on G for George a Lancaster bomber (now in the Canberra War musium ) The Stories that I heard from family members & from members of their Units about my Family ,sometimes makes me wonder how we ever won the war !!!!!!? My Dear Friend & Mentor Bob Fisher Claims my Father ran the whole time of his enlistment ,as some sort of private enterprise ! Aparently he should of had his Lance corprals stripes held on with velcro ! as he was busted & the promoted that many times Dave

	Any of you ever read Spike Milligans book on How they won the war? Like dave says its a wonder we did, 1 incident Spike talks about is when a 25 pounder decided to run away down hill . They chased after it and had to ask the infanry " Can we have our gun back please?"

	Yes - it was a VERY nearly run thing, to be sure! But ya know, the crazy antics weren't limited just to the allies.I've known a few "ex-warriors" from the other side,& to be honest..they ask the same questions!(With all this stupidity, how did I survive?!) The antecdotes I've heard over the years from the vets (of both sides) could have us talkin (& laughin till we pee!) for hours! Hoadie

	A good story I heard was from an old bloke who was behind the counter at Ray Jansas. He was an artillery man in the Royal Australian Army during WW2, and about 3 days after he enlisted (barely had time to get in his uniform) he was sent down to cowra and had a SMLE put in his hands and told to guard the jap prisioners...... Thing is it was the first time he had ever held a SMLE and had to ask the Sergeant of the guard how to load and use the thing!
