Just under 2 MOA is still quite good for 20 shots.  The enlarged bore may be the reason, bore should be .300 across the lands.  

A 3.5x scope is a luxury when you only shoot with irons. 

I recently started shooting CMP modern Service Rifle (AR-15) which allows a 4X scope.  For the first time I could actually see the target I was shooting at clearly, and have the reticle in focus at the same time, an enormous advantage.

I hear you! My wife made me get rid of my can of linseed oil after a friend just about burnt his garage down last summer! He put oil on an outdoor teak table, and left the rag on a newspaper in the sun... his wife told mine. I've switched to Watco Danish Oil. Not true to form, but I like the looks of the finished product!
