I have had several home projects that have kept me from the range for a month or so. All caught up! Just got back. Beautiful shooting day. Results (sorry, no pics as I have a flip phone...)
No4 Mk2...walnut cheek piece...Addley Precision scope mount...Leupold Freedom 1.5x4 straight tube scope. All rounds used full sized PPU brass, Winchester large rifle primers and 36 grs of H4895. Projectiles were 174gr FMJBT PPU, 174gr Sierra FMJBT MK's, and 180gr Sierra FB ProHunters. 5 warm up shots then10 shot groups. 174gr PPU. Total spread... 6.27". 8 shots in a 4.05" group. 174gr Sierra MK. Total spread... 3.26". 8 shots in a 2.26" group. 180gr Sierra ProHunter... Total spread. 3.28". 8 shots in a 2.31" group. Very happy with results. Interesting how the ProHunters and MK's shot close to the same, although the 180's were hitting the target about 1" higher than the 174's. (All shots were off a bench and rest at 100 yds.)

HT, that is very respectable for the SMKs and PH’s. Barrel doesn’t like those PPU FMJs.
Skennerton shows the Mk 2 action rifles had 2 groove barrels, which seems odd, a typo? Does the bore look good? I don’t think these rifles typically experienced a lot of shooting before they were withdrawn from service. How is the forend pressure on the barrel at the muzzle? If you have a trigger weight scale, you can measure the weight required to lift the barrel at the muzzle off the forend. Groups might close up a bit with increasing charge, safe up to 38 grains of H4895 for the 174 gr HPBT bullet. I suspect MV of your load is around 2300 fps. |

Thanks britrifles! I felt tight with the rifle. The bore is crisp and shiny. I have not disassembled this rifle. I bought it about four years ago for $600 CDN. It was a pretty good shooter right off. Other than clean the bore, add a walnut cheek piece and scope/mount, it's as bought. So I am very happy with the results. Like a lot of shooters, I was getting frustrated with trying to obtain that magical 1"MOA. Today I just went out to shoot. I think it was Goosic that brought me back into reality. He said if you can cover your groups with the palm of your hand with a stock Lee Enfield, it is doing what it was designed to do. I think my shooting skills have matched this rifles potential with those loads and stock condition. A great place to be!
