New to the group.

I've not seen any like that before.
If there aren't any makers marks on it, then I suspect it maybe a one off. To make a long range target sight using the volley sights for the base. Obviously guesswork on my part, so I am interested to see if anyone else has precise information. |

Many thanks! The seller had no idea of the sight’s origin. What’s the title of your book?

The picture is from Volume II of Lance's "A Collector's View" series of books: The Lee Enfield .22-inch R.F. Rifles.

Excellent information Lance! ( As always!).
I didn't spot the broad Arrow in the original post. I suspect that it is quite a rare sight. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Before the Great War, 1908?? the NRA (UK) held a competition of sorts for new designs of sights for the SMLE to be considered for competition use at the Imperial Meeting for the Kings Prize.
There were well over a hundred examples submitted from the little I have read on the subject, I suspect some were complete turkeys, others whilst workable were probably not up the quality of what BSA were producing at the time, and the others, where did they all go, and is this one of the?? I will just add that over the years I have seen a handful of unknown SMLE sights that lacked quality or engineering prowess and have wondered if they were indeed part of this partiular competition process. |
