Took the 42 Maltby to the range Sat. It was shooting high with the
battle sights, so I put a Mk I rear sight on, still a little high at
100yds with surplus ammo. ( GB and Kynoch)
I picked up some Wolf Gold 174grn fmj at the last gun show for $7.99 a box. The son ( with the sharp eyes) put 5 rounds into the 10 ring that you could cover with a quarter. Put the last two in the box in and had a 7 shot group a half-dollar would cover. I'll buy more of the Wolf gold if I can find it, and it's reloadable so I'll have brass. Ed |

Well, that proves that you cannot expect accuracy with surplus ammo. Note I am not saying you cannot achieve accuracy, I just mean you cannot expect it. Incidentally, how big is your 10 ring? We do not all use the same targets, you know. Also good news about the Wolf ammo. Sounds like it is worth the money. $8 for a box (do not give me that $7.99 sh*t) - how many in a box? This "shooting high" stuff makes me laugh. What did you have the sights set at? With Mk 1 sights set up correctly and set to 200 (lowest marked setting), your point of impact should be about 2" high. If you are higher, you have two options open to you. Either: - find a setting where you get an acceptable point of impact and note the setting down in the notebook you keep for every rifle OR - fit a taller foresight. They came in different heights for this very purpose. One thing that can be said is that the rifle is obviously a good one! |

100 yd NRA military (open sight) target. 9, 10, and X are 6 1/4". 10 ring is 3 1/4", x ring is 1 1/4".
The group was at 6 o'clock right under the bull (x). We were using a navy hold at 6o'clock, so poi was about 2 1/2" above poa. With the military stuff it was hitting 8 to 10" higher. If I can find a load to match the wolf ammo I'm set, if not I'll be looking for that taller front sight! The Wolf ammo comes in boxes of 20, and the $7.99 gets rounded down to $7 when I tell the wife they were on sale! Ed |

Thats good shootin' Ed . Good to hear about havin' a good buddy with ya too . Lately , I've found some South African fodder . I measured the pill at .308 and was somewhat sceptical at first but I'm getting aprox. 3" groups no prob. at 100yd and surprizingly , just a shade more out to 300yd using my '44 Maltby or my Longbranch . My scoped Savage has abit more of a spread , but I'm still happy with the results. I shoot the expensive stuff as well , since I also hunt with my Longbranch and thats when I really need to be seriously accurate. It doesn't seem to matter what range I shoot , 50yd to 300yd , I'm still on the money with Winchester Super X CXP3 180gr . PSP's

ED well done !
Sounds like you &
your mate had the Fun of cork ! at the range & that's what it's all
about ! I'm quite happy to get 2inch groups ! Hey I always say if you
want a Tack driver buy a benchrest type rifle ! If you want
a honest working rifle Buy a Enfield ! Out of a MkIII Ihave
always worked on the rulle of thumb that at 25yds you'll be on the
money. Then at 200yrds you'll be getting the same result due to the
trajectry of the bullet .(Mk V11 ammo )

Well, I hate to admit it but I'm getting the "old eye" problem. Doc
says still 20-20 but can't focus at 6 inches and the end of the barrel
and the target at the same time! Probably does the kid good to show me
up once in awhile. I put peeps on the mauser, and will probably have to
look into scopes sometime soon. In the meantime if I want to see what a
rifle is capable of, I have to bring the kid along!

Mutter ,Mutter ! Bloody Kids & their young eyes ! Mutter
Should be a place for us Old farts to shoot where the targets are still
where we can see em (I personally see nothing wrong with targets at 10
feet from the bench ) I really get a Kick out of watching young people
with good eyes take those long shots that we used to take back in the
days when our Bladders were good for 12 hrs!Dave |

Heres a little trick(old age & treachery will always triumph over youth & vigor!!)
I have a bunch of targets @ my camp.I "doctor" some up before anyone arrives. When I take the young'uns out back to shoot long - I'M the one that plants the targets. After the dust settles, the young uns are ALWAYS impressed with the old goat's shootin ability! They still talk about how I NEVER miss round the bull, & THEY can barley hit the target!! (Course -It'd work out ALOT cheaper for me if I found a way to get BLANKS!) Hoadie |

HOADIE You sneaky bugger....but i never thought of that. nice way to impress some people on the range. I could be a local attraction pullin that stunt, maybe stand there with a blind fold on, and always findin the bulls eye!

I was spotting for a friend who was having trouble hitting the target at 100 yards. He passed the rifle to me and suggested I have a go. I fired and he started to tell me where it had gone. I did not listen - I fired another 4. There was a group on the target. He looked puzzled and asked me where I was aiming. I told him that I looked through the fuzzy hole and put the fuzzy thing at the other end of the barrel on the centre of the fuzzy white thing I could almost see 100 yards away. Of course, I was taking the same aim every time, while he insists on chasing his last shot all over the range. There are so many variables that you cannot get an appreciation of where one of these old clunkers is pointing until you have sent at least 3 rounds down range. I do not like scopes - all they do is show how unsteady my hold is. |

My problem is remembering which of the three front sight heights I used
on the last shot! Light gray, darker gray, or fuzzy gray. You are
right, as long as I'm consistent, I get pretty good groups, just not
always where I want them.
