Greetings, and thanks for such an informative forum!
As the new owner of a No.4, Mk2, I'd love to hear the recommendations of forum members re: what replacement/spare parts should be kept on hand -- that is, which springs, screws, etc., are a good idea to lay in for a rainy day?

I would certainly keep an extractor spring or 2 on hand as they are the most likely spring to break.
You could probably keep a spare firing pin spring and sear spring although they are less prone to breakage.
get all the screws you can as you may get a rifle that someone has buggered the heads on.
all up, scrounge whatever parts you can if you are starting a collection of Enfields.

I gave this some serious thought. I have never had to replace any parts on a working rifle, there very reliable and other then normal maintenance I have never broke an Enfield. Now restoring one is a different story. Under normal use an Enfield should last many life times. I agree with the above post those would be a few good spare parts.

I agree CM, I too have never needed spares, and my No1 has seen plenty of hard use.

Thanks for your replies! I guess my question is somewhat revealing -- my other rifles are semi-automatic, which intuitively seem more prone to mechanical failures. I keep what seems like a shoebox full of springs and other parts for my DSA FAL, although in fairness I should note that it's been utterly reliable. The same can be said for my 10/22, but I'm still more at ease knowing that I have some spares for it, as well.
Years ago, I learned to shoot on bolt-actions, none of which were as robust as the No.4, but none of which have had any problems from decades of use. I suppose that's what might be called a clue!

10-22 no telling how many 100's of 1000's of rounds I have put thru mine with never a failure. I'm a affraid to clean it, may stop working just kidding she is well maintained

Extractor and spring, striker and spring are the only spares I keep for working rifles. Now spare parts for rescuing Bubba's handy work in another thing, boxes of parts and furniture. I have acquired a set of bolt heads in the unlikely event I need one. The #2 and #3 are hard to find, if you see one at a reasonable price I would snag it.

Got several working .303's and never had to replace a thing! Like a Model A - they just keep on truckin. If you are restoring - buy up all the junk you can - you never know what you need.

Like the others have posted I have yet to break an Enfield part.
Also like you I shoot a self-loading rifle & have broken parts so for the FAL I keep parts. Firing pins, spring kits, extractors, gas piston & so on.
For the Enfield I keep a spare extractor spring, & then only because everyone on here says I should get one now as they are getting harder to find as time goes by.

If I would have saved all the .22 brass I have put through My 10/22 rifles in the past years ..I could sell it for scrap and buy a new 10/22 .... Them little rifles are great ..and a very good buy second hand when You can find them ...and the barrel is a breeze to change on top of that ...not that I have ever seen a 10/22 bore shot out yet !!! |

I don't even remember when I got my 10-22. What I do remember is that I was really mad.
Why? Because the price for a new one went up the day I got it. All the way up to $89.00 Boy was I mad it had been $85.00 the day before.   |

$89.00 ????? That had to be way before 1986 !!!!! I paid $125.00 for mine at Wall Mart ...So I may have had My single shot 410 when You bought Your 10/22
I do remember My first bolt action .22 Marlin Mdl 25 W/7 round mag ... My Step Dad paid $79.00 for it back in 1983 ....and She still shoots just as good today as She did back then ....I do need to fix the ejector on it now ...... |

I have a stainless steel version that came with the sling and the Camo laminated stock, never been fired it is 20 years old, One of my children will be happy one day.
