Hey Guys,

I got a Lee Enfield Sniper I think is legit, but I would like some opinions.  This one has a missing "T" and no scope number on the stock, leading me to believe it is one of the Enfields that never had a scope assigned.  I got the gun from my dad who was a long-time respected gun collector/ dealer.  The gun itself used to be kept in a closet going back to the 1970's.  I remember it as a kid back then.  What are your thoughts?  Thanks for the help!

Welcome. We will need to see the rest of the rifle to make a more informed decision on what you have.
The flatside of the reciever where the scope pads should be. The wristsocket with the serial number. Pictures of those areas are necessary...

Thanks for the feedback!  I am not looking at selling it or anything.  I just wanted to check to see if it was legit. I really appreciate it.

Is there any manufacturer markings on the sling?

Looks legit to me too, although there are some very clever forgeries around too.

I assumed you looked at the top of the butt stock just behind the action body butt socket? I wonder if the scope was later damaged and this number sanded off?

There were Savage made T’s that supposedly never had a scope fitted. But, if the scope mount pads are fixed to the action body, H&H must have had a scope and mount to culminate to the bore with. These were all individually hand fitted.   I never quite understood this, why a T with mount pads did not get stamped with the scope serial number used to fit the pads with. Anyone have an idea?

Brit,
I read somewhere at one timeWink that some pad where marked on top flats either with scope ids or rifle ids or maybe it was inspection marks. Can`t recall which.
Maybe it wasn`t done or discontinued as a cost/time saving measure. Gaud only knows, it is after all and Enfield

Nice handmedown, definite keeper for sure.
You can always acquire original mount and scope(big bucks) or repops to dress it up.... make her look the way she was intended.
Good read here www.artiozen.com

Thanks for your inputs!  My dad was not into rifles as he was a handgun guy.  But, he did have an eye for things.  Some of the guns he had and sold I really wish he had kept.  One was a US Army Lee rifle made right in my home town of Milwaukee.  Another was a brand new Webley RAF snubnose revolver.   Ahh, memories.... anyways  here is one last shot of the shaved down sight and stamps.

As far as not having a "T" or a scope number, I always thought that my rifle was part of a batch that did not have either.  According to Laidler, he states that,

"Two batches of 1,500 and 1,127 partially completed rifles were returned to Ordnance Stores.  These rifles had the body pads fitted, and probably the cheek rests as well.  They were marked with the "TR" and "S51" stamps but not the small "T" on the body side, this being the last operation by the examiner."

This rifle would describe that to a "T".  Pun intended.  I figured this to be the case, but it is always a good thing to run it through people who know these things a he!! of a lot better than I do!

I don’t see any markings on the pads on my T, but the scope mount itself has a stamped Letter-Number to allow the upper two saddle clamps to be orientated correctly if the scope is removed from the mount bracket.
