 Hey all,

I found out the other day that Canada has been ousted from the top of the longest confirmed kill.  British Corporal Craig Harrison topped Cpl Rob Furlong 2.43Km shot, Not once but twice hitting 2 insurgents from 2.47Km.

Yeah! But he didn't use a .50 cal - he used a newer sniper rifle I've never heard of till now. If I recall it was in the high 30's in caliber
Awesome feat to be sure!(Wish I could meet THAT guy!)

The state of our economy he better not miss at £2 per cartridge!  Big smile From what little I know it's a 338. He actually scored 3 hits 2 taliban and the last 1 he used to whack the machine gun to disable it. He's a hell of a shot.

Ya it's a 8.59mm or 338 Lapua Magnum.  The L115A3 is nice looking piece of kit, I'd still prefer a C-14 Timberwolf though.

Yeah, 338 Lapua magnum. Works good on goats as well.

The range that he made those shots at are amazing though.
But the winters coming,

And the snow will cover tracks,

And I'll be watching,

Because I'm hunting you

My good friend is Chief Instructor at the NZ Army Sniper’s School – he was a Brit Army Sniper in Iraq.  We’ve talked over many things – this record shot as well.  The thing is, at that range – EVERYTHING has to be perfect – wind, climate, in fact, all atmospherics; even things like sunlight and the incidence on the target etc. the exact same balance in loads and of course, the optics – parallax free.

Imagine the small difference in subtended angle at the muzzle, extrapolated out to 2.5 km.  To be able to repeat that shot three times, shows that it clearly wasn’t a fluke.

There is talk that a 3 km shot is not far away, but it probably will not be with a 338 Lapua.  Remaining energy at that sort of range is getting too low – look for new calibres around the .375/.450 inch.  Possibly a wildcat 416 Rigby.

Evil is when good men do nothing about it.

Kysusha; I hear tells from some of my buddies that are still in sniper platoon, that the Brits have range cards out to 3Km for the L115A3.  But I do concur that even if they do, not much left on that bullet by that distance.

A company that is 'rumoured' to produce the round that is doing so much good in Afghanistan does it's R&D at the range I use. I have been lucky enough to have been granted access to their development bullet heads in 7.62.  All I can say is that they make a mediocre marksman like me with a 60 yr old rifle look good.

Now I need to get a .338 on my ticket! LOL

There is some development work with the Ex Soviet 14.7mm round as a long-range sniper round.  I know the person working on it.

If you go to the Accuracy International web site, you'll find that they have all the information on the rifle and round used.

Oh how I want one!

I dont care what caliber or how many rounds it takes, to make a kill shot at that range is ungodly. I actually got to see a McMillan Tac-50 liek the one Rob Furlong used. I fell in love. What some dont know, is that Rob Furlong set his 1.509 mile record the same day as one of his squadmates made a kill shot at 1.492 miles. Simply awesome.

I heard a rumour the other day that Canada may have won the title back. They're checking the range and arguing who should claim the 'kill' as it's a Canadian serving with the British Forces.

It's only just a rumour at the moment.

My question is, when is the 2 mile kill shot gonna happen?

I asked a friend of mine the same question and he replied;

'I keep slinging them out there, one day someone will walk into one of them.'

You've got to admire his optimism.
