Hey guys,
I picked up this sporterized enfield last year and I'm just kinda getting around to really looking at it in detail. I bought it without a magazine, which I have found there appears to be different ones for the different variants, so I need to know which one I have, in order to order the right magazine... Please don't flog me too hard for not knowing. I searched around quite a little bit best as I can tell it seems pretty difficult to really identify the different ones?? Here are a few pictures. I realize the import mark probably doesn't help much, but hopefully the other stuff does. Sure wasn't much for markings or numbers on it, that I could see, unless its under the stock somewhere. If you need more pictures, or of something specific, let me know? Thanks in advance... |

Only one picture showing, but it look like a Lee Enfield No4 (could be a Mk1, Mk1* or Mk2) but the MK doesn't matter, all No4 Mags are the same.
With the LE the magazines are 'fitted' (tuned) to each rifle and once fitted and working they should not be removed, the rifle is reloaded by using 'charger clips' NOT by removing the magazine. Post another picture showing the action for final confirmation of the model. The markings on the muzzle are UK Civilian proof markings so it has been in the UK Civilian Gun trade before making its way to the US |

Yes it needs a magazine for any No4 rifle. Those for a No1 won't fit. They're fairly easy to tell apart. The mags that won't work have a full length spine at the rear extending down all the way to the bottom & the reinforcing channels on the sides of the magazine also go all the way to the bottom. The one you want has a shorter rib going about 1/2 way & the channels also stop before the bottom. You want the one on the left. |

Sorry those other pictures in the first post didn't work lets see if these do?
I had continued to look and research online and it looked like from the type of sights I did maybe have the no 4 but still wasn't a 100% |

That's pretty cool, is that common? That doesn't seem like that would be a very prevalent situation, although I guess I don't know much history on how these were typically imported to the US either.

Yes, pretty common but often marked on the top/side of the barrel at the breech end. If you can post some more pictures (all the others are just black X's) we can give you some more history from the relevant markings - it could even be a 'commercial' sporterisation (or even made that way) rather then a 'bubba' sporterisation. |

All your pictures show up here as broken links. When I opened a few of them separately they're from "Golightly Innovations" & are pictures of winter treescapes, with an advert to buy the images? How exactly are you trying to post these images? Your rifle has the muzzle configuration of a No4 of some kind. The No1 has the barrel almost completely recessed. |

but - that does raise a lot of interest and other questions , we would like to know a lot more of your recent purchase , post more photos of the other makings and we will all know more of what you now have , we are interested and willing to help more ,

I just went back and edited the one post and used the forum's photo uploader. I have a photography account at SmugMug for a number of different things and had uploaded the pictures there and was just trying to BBcode them to display over here because I wasn't sure if images had to be hosted remotely or not when I made the first few posts. Usually it works on other forums but not sure why I had so much issue here, but they should be showing and displaying in the above post since I uploaded them directly through here, now.

Yes I see them now. You seem to have a sporterised No4 Mk 1 or Mk1 *. If you press a lever at the rear to remove the bolt its a Mk1, if theres a little cut section in the rail about 1/2" behind the breech & you just flip the bolt head out there it's a Mk1* I use Imgur for my image hosting & they have several file options to use. I use the "DIRECT" option. It seems to work when use with the {img} {/IMG} tags for HTML.(use square braces.) Just saw the new image, its a Mk1, no star. |

It is a UK manufactured No4 Mk1 manufactured at the Fazakerley factory (just outside Liverpool).
Somewhere on the rifle is a 'non-standard part' which could be as simple as a 'stripped bolt hole' that has been drilled oversize and a new bolt fitted. This is shown as a 'warning' to armourers by using the letter A as a suffix to the part number. Fazakerley quality control was very poor and labour relations (shall we say) 'not good' and a large proportion of their No4 production was marked with the "A" suffix. |

Have the headspace checked out by a competent gunsmith, knowledgeable with Enfields. You have a #3 bolthead .

Very cool, thank you guys. I went ahead and ordered a "Pro Mag" for a No 4, and now to order some ammunition for it and hopefully get to try it out.
I like to buy old rifles of this era, but I only shoot them on occasion. Since it is already kinda sporterized, any suggestions for additional modifications? Or is it worth finding an original stock and swapping it back over? Wouldn't really use as hunting rifle or much beyond target practicing and shooting for fun probably.

Well spotted - On ebay that's $100+ for just the bolt head. |
