Are you guys talking about the "bolt" thats part of the action, or do you mean an actual bolt head, on the rifle somewhere?

The bolt assembly is two pieces, the bolt body and the bolt head. The bolt head makes contact with the cartridge case. Your particular bolt head has a #3 stamped on it. They came in four sizes #0 #1 #2 #3. Each size is supposed to .003" larger then the next number. (If a bolt closed with a NO-GO gauge on a #2 bolthead, you would typically remove that one and install the larger size in length #3 bolthead to adjust the headspace.)
Get a reputable gunsmith with the proper 303 headspace gauges and have it checked as a precautionary measure, please. Enfield did make a #4 bolthead but. Trying to find one of those would be like finding our Lord and Savior taking a dump in a Waffle House...

Ahhh! You might want to rethink the "Pro Mag". They have a terrible reputation. All Enfield mags need "some fitting", but Pro mag frequently needs the licenceplate jacking up & a new car backing under it.

Well I already bought it off ebay, so are they so bad I should just go ahead and buy another one, or is this one worth tinkering with?

I had a pro mag, not sure where it went when I had my No4 rebarreled but it fit mine ok. The only trouble I had with it was if you were not careful the bottom plate would slide off with use.

I also had one. I'm not even sure why they still make them. Total garbage, in my humble opinion.

I was given a Promag once, it appeared to manufactured from soft metal, probably because of limited press die capacity at the factory. I think that they are made 'off shore'.
It might work OK (not good, but ok), until you find a real one. The Promag that was given to me was a five rounder, it looked cute. I gave away, and I think that they passed it along too. One of those things that gets 'paid forward' in a box of junk or re-gifted between friends. I almost got it back again in a trade. They can be made to work but like any new mag they might need adjusting to make them feed. Some say that they can never be adjusted to be 100% functional. Poor position, platform jams and feed lips that move with use. Save yourself some grief and by an original mag. It might require fitting and tweaking, but once it is adjusted, you will have the reliability that a Promag does not. |
