Today while giving my full wood No4 Mk2 and No1 MkIII a fresh coat of linseed oil, I noticed something I never had before. The weight, balance, and especially the kind of rounded wrist on the butt stock feel so natural for using with a bayonet. I haven't had a lot of experience handling similar era weapons from other nations, I wonder if they have that same feel?

My 1903 also feels handy for bladework, to me. In fact, I've used it in that role to dispatch a possum as I didn't want to deal with the police for discharging a firearm in town - but also didn't want to get too close as it was acting aggressively in full daylight. An '03 with the '05 bayonet gives a good bit of reach.

It is all about balance and ergonomics for me, in conjunction with a proper sling. My faux No4Mk1* T with a full magazine, oiler, pull through, and sling balances out perfectly on the king screw. Last year I used it while deer hunting. Fully ladened, it weighs 12.5 lbs but with the sling being used, carrying it was no different than that of my hunting rig. I have had several other types of bolt action rifles of the course of my life and yet I always return to the No4 Enfield

I find with the M44 Mosin Nagant, it shoots more accurately when the bayonet is extended, as opposed to being in the folded position. Same deal; feels more balanced. I just assumed it was designed that way.

There is an interesting video shooting Russian sniper rifles with fixed bayonets.
Adjusting dope for POI.
Comparisons of WWII sniper rifles too! |

The Russian sniper shooting the No. 4 T was a great video! Note that he mistakenly held right in a left to right wind which caused a miss at 550 yards. Otherwise he would have had a straight clean of all the targets out to 700 yards. He may have intentionally done that. Regardless, Very impressive!

I just performed the Bayonet Challenge Contestants No5 Mk1, SMLE NoI mkIII, No4 mk1, MAS 36, M1917, Gewehr 1888, Lebel 1886 and 1903A3
The MASS was the most lively the SMLE, No4 and 1903 were in a try for second, the Gewehr was the best of the longer rifles the No5 was to light
