Been playing with m1s and m14 types for a while. My grandfather had a mk III that he purchased out of a crate back in the 60s at the LGS. He used to let me get it out of the gun case and look at it anytime I wanted. This was when he instructed me on safe handling etc... it was passed on to me, I hope to pass it to my son one day. Decided to get it out and find out what I can about it. Plus get a cast load to punch some holes in some paper and make the steel ring! So here I am. Been lurking a while decided to join in on the fun
Oh if your wondering about my screen name. I’m in Louisiana...shot on a ipsc squad called team gator.

already posted a few pics about my rear sight. I’m looking for a windage adjustable one. My cast loads are high and right at 50 so trying to diagnose what’s the deal there. From what I remember approximately 40yrs ago the rifle was dead on with factory Remington 180 core locks these measured .312”. Since those are not available anywhere to test... I got 100 new ppu cases and 100 ppu 180 .311 soft points, my old chrono readings show approximately 2400 FPS with the Remington factory ammo. So glad I kept records.... I chrono every rifle I had that weekend I got it and wrote all the data down. Yes, a plan finally paid off! Lol. So got h4895, Varget, 2400, unique, some others got a ladder loaded up of Varget so we shall see, soon... I’ll post results and seek feedback.
Been loading and casting and powder coating a while. Comfortable with a screwdriver around my rifles also (very important) I know what my limits are when gunsmithing. No Bubba or ego here! I just take my time and see what happens. I know the smle is challenging so looking to have a fun project. |

Please let us know how the 180 gr PPU bullets do with Varget. I would think 39 to 40 grains should do well.
The No. 1 rifles have “positive compensation” meaning slow bullets leave the muzzle on a higher angle of departure so higher impact on the target at 50 yards can be expected. Depending on the muzzle velocity, they may be low at 100. I’ve seen groups also shift to the right (or left) in loads that have significantly different MVs, which I suspect is due to different barrel harmonics. |

also check the muzzle and crown for cleaning core wear, Lee Enfield's a prone to this due to the way soldiers cleaned the rifle. Often seen rifles that the have an obvious oval appearance as a result. This can definitely cause an increase in fliers and other inaccuracies.
