Last year I entered a competition with my scoped No8. (X6 schmidt Bender).
It was a bench style competition for leisure .22 rifles using scope's up to X24 magnification. IMost people using CZ heavy barrel. I ended up 3rd on the day and best of our club. This year I am using the 1918 .22 with the AGParker rear dioptre . Hopefully I won't be last! |

No doubt, a high power scope reduces aiming errors Zed. But, I’ll bet you still place high as you have considerable experience with the aperture sight. Besides, how cool would it be to do well with a 1918 military trainer with no scope. Best of luck and let us know how you do!

Last year my club colleagues were laughing and asking why I brought my 70 year old Enfield instead of my CZ 455 heavy barrel. I'd only fitted the scope on the No8 the week before.
I explained that it was just for the he!! of it; and if I wasn't last I'd be happy. They were surprised when I shot top score for our 11 club members and 3rd place for the Saturday. Ended up 5th overall when all scores counted. We shoot two cards of 5 targets, 4 shots on each. So possible 400. Should be fun! Wish me luck! I'm lending the CZ to my wife

Kinda reminds me of what happened to me this past summer at a regional vintage military rifle match.
Not many US competitive shooters recognize anything but a 03, M1 or M1917. Some shooters see a Lee Enfield and turn their nose up with a “not invented here” attitude, so can’t be very good. We had about 60 shooters from all over the south East at that match. Well, I took the trophy home for the high two day combined score. Day 1 was the M1, I finished second, but my score with the No. 4 on day 2 was decisive, no one else came close to my score with other vintage bolt action rifles. The match director remarked how good my score was “considering he used a Lee Enfield”. Well, he just didn’t realize how accurate the No. 4 rifle is. I shot 10 consecutive hits in the X ring at 200 yards, and surprised the he!! out of the guy working the butts (pits) and the guy who was scoring for me.

Its just a prejudice. What was the saying (I'm going to get it wrong). "Germany made the best hunting rifle (Mauser) , America made the best target rifle (03/03A3 (a modified good hunting rifle from Germany) & The British made the best battle rifle!" The SMLE & it's descendants. Or something like that.

They don't make them like they used to! Great shooting all around. Its fantastic we are still using rifles that could be 100 years old. Incredible. I wasn't able to schedule my Appleseed event, so will defer till the spring - hopefully next year I can post photos of my targets. I got a little rifle target practice is this summer, but have to put it away for a while as I switch to shotgun season.

I read something very similar, it went like this; “Germans went to war with a hunting rifle, Americans went to war with a target rifle, the British went to war with a battle rifle. |

Well I shot my first attempt at the competition yesterday.
Scoring 173 from a possible 200. Not too embarrassing but could do better. My wife scored 182 with the CZ455. She could do better as well! It's only the third time shooting with the AGParker rear sight. So I will enter a second target next week. Due to Covid, you shoot your target when you want and send in the results. The best group I had was unfortunately high in the 7-8 ring's. So had a few adjustments on the go. Great fun though!

Knowing how tough the targets are that you use Zed, that is a good result. Do they allow sighters and a spotting scope?
Our CMP Service Rifle “EIC” matches do not allow sighters, so you have to know your elevation settings for 200, 300 and 600 yards. You have to be good at reading wind too, your first shot at 600 could otherwise be off the target with a loss of 10 points in a 10 mph cross wind. I once dialed in windage in the wrong direction, took me three shots to figure out what went wrong. |

This competition is not service rifle. It's a version of bench rest for non bench rest rifles.(Leisure rifles and any other that's within the weight limit and up to X24 scopes).
You are allowed a front bag rest or bipod. Also a spotting scope. You have 20 minutes to shoot your card; which includes as many practice shot's as you want on target 6. The other five targets you need to shoot 4 shot's on each. I only used 4 practice shot's and as the last two were 10's I set off. My wife and I both finished at around the 16 minute mark; so I'll take that onboard for the next attempt. The targets have a 1cm 10 bull and 2cm 9 and 3cm 8 etc. In our Service rifle competitions, we get 5 sighting shot's and are allowed a spotting scope during those 5 only; not during the shoot for score series.

If that target is at 25 meters, that’s about 1.5 MOA 10 ring and about the same size as the NRA/CMP Short Range Target X ring. Very tough to hold all shots in that 10 ring with a peep sight, even with a front support.
