They say that when they attacked the Bismark the German AA gunners were unable to hit them because they didn't believe that an attack aircraft could fly so slow.

The Germans couldn't depress their guns enough?
And, do we know what type of .303 in guns on the plane?

They mention that in the detailed text at the link, but I didn't want to clog up the server with all the info so I just posted from the specs page.
It makes sense not firing a rocket right next to a doped piece of fabric though. |

A couple of weeks ago I was at the BA factory at Brough (East Yorks) and just happened to be in a small workshop where they restored a Swordfish. On one of the walls was a large peice of canvas taken from underneath the wing (The rondel was still on it), on this canvas, written in pencil was a name written by a Scottish girl when she had repaired the aircraft's wing during the war. Next to this was a photograph of the same 'girl' 60 years later after they had traced her.
I'm sure the story will be somewhere on the internet.

Cookie Monster, I hope you got those pics regarding the restored Swordfish. At the weekend I found my father's old wartime photo's - used to steal recon film stock and cut it down. There's a huge collection of action shots taken in N.Africa, Tobruk and Italy. There's a few of Swordfish in 1938. I'm going to scan them before they fade completely, if you would like I'll send you the aircraft ones. The funny thing is, that in over 300 photo's there isn't one with a Lee Enfield in it.

Well the sinking of bismark wasnt the only success of the swordfish they were also used to great success against italy there navy base at Taranto was bombed and their fleet torpedoed at their moorings and it also gave the japs the idea for pearl harbour.
