visited there 50 years ago , my mother was a civil war buff and planned our summer trips around the centenial events , i think we visited most of the sites on the proper years 61-65 , i almost didnt go with them in 64-65 thinking i was getting too old to vacation with them , but i must admit i never regretted the trips when we were on them ,
we made two a year - one civil war oriented for my mother , and one west for my father who loved the wild west ,
its a really moving experience to see these places in a historic context , but i think it would be even better with a re-inactment going on ,

Went visit a cousin of mine years ago in cuero Texas , They had some kind of festival going on at the time ..and out of no where ...a couple of guys dressed up like cowboys had a mock gun fight in the street with some really loud blanks ...very interesting ...They had the proper garb and started doing their thing as the crowd opened up and let them have at it !!! as a kid in the 5th grade I was in awe !!!! I used to have one of the empty cartridges that one of the cowboys gave me !!!

Those eras ran parallel and over lapped some, my son likes the cowboy era more as well. My oldest daughter still will sit down and watch an old Black & White western with me now. Plus nothing like those dubbed in English spaghetti westerns , made Clint famous. |

CM, the wife's relative in Biloxi ( the one related to Dr. Mud) told me in no uncertain terms that it was the "War of Northern Aggression". Ed

Good, getting used to retirement! I really wanted to make the get together at Krestan's , but my son is getting married June 17th and we're helping with the plans. For some reason my wife seems to think it's important we're here to make things go smoothly!

"...Those eras ran parallel and over lapped some...."
they did and they didnt , ill grant you the expansion of the west followed the civil war , what my family lived in was a historic dicotomy , we all loved it all but there was a concentrated research and reading area of interest , i cross over ,
my mothers interests were of the period of independence to the post civil war , she studied the colonies and the trials [war of 1812] through the post civil war era , dabbled in the western 1860-70s expansion ,my mother pretty much could have cared less after custers last stand and was only interested there because GAC was someone she felt got ill treated in the post civil war , a lot of the civil war personalities were involved in the indian wars ,
her heart [a genteal heart] was east of the mississippi and loved the beginnings of this country in every aspect ,
my father was interested in the 1870s-early 1900s wild west , west of the ississippi , he loved the western development , the cattle barons , the sodbusters , the gunfighters , the places and times of the indian wars , he beleived , i think , in manefest destiny , while a tollerant man , i think he was on board with growth and expansion of this country by strong men who made what they envisioned come true by hard work and when neccessary a strong hand ,
that leaves me a mixed bag i guess , i do recall having to switch historic generations of interest a bunch and loosing track of where we were a number of times , i love it all in the end ,
i think the absence of WWII in our lives for the most part [their actual lifetime ] sort of confused me -
till we did the trip 'back' to all the bases they were 'stationed' at durring the war , im not certain my siblings understood what was happening , but i did as a freshman in high school , i saw where they lived at each site , i saw where he trained , and heard some interesting stories , i saw where they were married in rantoule , illinois , and i heard her tell of all the train rides alone both to and from his ordered place , and she mentioned that last trip on the train when he shipped overseas - she went home to his family ....something my siblings still do not get ,

i need to add here that my folks enjoyed their trip to saipan - where he was stationed durring the war , i hope one day to make the trip just for me , but with them both gone now im not certain i would add it to my bucket list ,
i also need to say - my mother called 'bull run' by its propper name of mannassas , she used the 'right' names for the others as well , but being born in iowa she was most interested in where the iowa troops were sent , blue mills [missouri] - shilo - vicksburg - and with sherman at chatanooga/atlanta/columbia , i had no actively serving relatives in this [iowa] area at that time , its where she was born and raised - thus herinterest , i know not of her family in ohio , but i know a little of my fathers family in arkansas , they were on the other side at blue mills , ive only begun to learn these things in later life , i did not realise the nature of my mothers intrest early in life ,

I gave away my canvas(never used it anyway after 1st Manassass) Gave away the fire irons(never used them, either) Still got 3 uniforms, my leathers, gaiters, 2 pairs boots, canteen, lantern, ENFIELD MUSKET, box pack, overcoat, other odds & sods. Ex wife still has all her period clothing-most NEVER used!(She'd like to get rid of it) (Uniforms are a little tight now-think they shrunk) Hoadie |
