Well, I do have a COO Anschutz rear locking 22 hornet and it is so slick. The firing pin strike is rather light but it works. Now for bolt open loaded chamber carry it is simply not safe - the bolt can be easily bumped closed. The COC Lee Enfield simply cannot be bumped closed so that system trumps all in my books. The bolt can be closed very quietly too for hunting.

Funny enough, I just finished refitting a military 2- stage trigger and an original bolt shroud and safety on a Zastava sporter ( yugo mauser 98 ) in 375 H&H. The owner hunts with an issue No 5 Jungle carbine and a sporterized Brno 98 in 8mm. He prefers the military 2- stage triggers over the commercial single stage ones.
As for the coo vs coc, I use both and to be honest I don't really have a preference. The lee - Enfields are faster to operate though. Thats down to bolt handle position and the cock on closing on the SMLE's. The p-14's and M- 17's are coc, but aren't as " slick " as the No 1's, 4's and 5's though. I guess thats why they're my favourites. Hmmm, I guess I do have a preference lol.

he!!o there was never a cock on opening for this rifle. You are talking about the 1917 or 1914 Enfield.

the lee enfeild is designed to cock-on-closing , if you want a cock-on-opening but a mauset or a US springfield , i see no need to alter something that has worked just fine for well over a century , its part of the experience of this realm ,

You'd need to put a cam on the bolt or add one at the rear so that as the handle is lifted it pulls the firing pin back.
Don't know that one exists or existed for the Lee-Enfield.

This is my opinion and mine only so take it with agrain of salt. The simple answer would be that, everyone wants the rifles built on the Mauser action with forward locking lugs and the cock on opening option. It is a no thinking process. You lift the bolt handle and it cocks to full battery. No guess work involved. The Enfield on the other hand has the operator moving the bolt bolt handle up and back until the cocking piece clears the sear and then pushing the bolt forward and down completing the cocking process. The Enfield has the option of manually operating the cocking piece to either half cock of full as well. More steps in the process. The modern day paper puncher or game slayer wants immediate satisfaction that cock on closing rifles cannot afford . No one is interested in the idiosyncrasies of the Lee-Enfield bolt action any longer where target shooting and hunting are considered within the realms of the modern day trigger jockey. |

And to get what this modern shooter wants, Goosic, you wind up with a Mauser '98 type action, that fights you in both directions.
Never did like the '98 style actions. Best Mauser action is the '96,...cock on closing! The others are all clunk to me.

I think historically in the US bolt actions became popular when you were able to get 1903 surplus rifles, which were based on Mausers. What i find amusing is seeing modern British shows (I will not mention any example such as Our_World_War) where Enfields are shot like Mausers (take it out of the shoulder, lower it, and so on) while the proper way to shoot it is becoming forgotten: |

I was at the range last week with a buddy sighting in his Sako, T/C .308 and an old Savage lever .243. He asked me to send a few down range out of each rifle. Maybe it's what I'm used to but I way like the two stage trigger more. I feel more control.

Yes! One of my pet peeves is those who "dismount" even to work the bolt.

To me cock on open or closed is moot.
Both systems you have go through the full motion to get a round in or empty out. |

Lead from the front; eliminate all obstacles...

Still Shiloh, the camming action of the L-E causes the extraction and opening to be very easy, and not much pressure required to cock as the bolt closes, so there is still altogether less resistance than with the cock on opening Mauser styles....that's why the L-E is the fastest bolt action ever devised.
Another consideration, is the smaller amount of movement to lift the bolt and cycle the action with the Lee Enfield. Best, Richard.
