Topic: No. 5 Mk.1 BayonetPosted: January 19 2007 at 3:38am |

I have been wanting one of these for a while. But they are not the most abundant. Well I got one now! It was made by Poole I think (P) in '46 and it has broad head arrow markings on many of the components. My question, How can I cleanup the scales on it without causing any dammage. Second question, I've read that the #5 bayonet was also considered a fighting knife. Would putting a bit of an edge on it detract from its value?
Thanks

From a historical standpoint (one of my girlfriends has a son that is a Museum curator) leave it the way it is!!!Unless it is in dire condition. Can you post a pic?

as long as they dont start applying that preservation wax treatment you probably are OK , but if they move you to that storage area where they keep the nondisplayables id figure it was over
my poole is a 47 - matches my rifle 10/47 , third from left

I'll try taking some better pics of the bayonet in the mourning at work. I think it probably has better light. The scabbard looks good, I took it appart and cleaned and oiled it. A bit of light rust and most of the painted finish is gone but no dents.

I got my bayo a few days ago.... i was getting worried, cuz i hadn't heard from the seller since the bidding closed. But it showed up in the mail anyhow.
right on time actually. It's really in great condition! and it fits, hah! Now my rifle feels more like some kind of lance or spear. 17" of steel on the end makes me feel like i'm in that movie Zulu with Michael Caine. Yeah! (P.S. I know neither the Enfield Mk III or the 1907 Bayonet were used in that movie.) |
