A recon pilot. No guns. The Spitfire kept him alive.

What a great story! so great they made the effort to find the pilot. And now his family have a wonderful archive of his service.

Its like I've always said.; The SPITFIRE was the Queen of the Skies." Even the Gerries wanted her!
Quite a kite. When Rhino was here last, we visited the Lancaster's nest..nearby is a SPIT...he got quite a charge out of the security guy goin ballistic cuz I was "Touching" the Spitfire. (Course, I was touching it in a different "way" than I touch the Mitche!!, or the Vampire, or the Harvard or...) Hoadie |

Here's a link to a Spitfire that is owned by one of my clients. It's a Mk19 photo recon model with the Griffon 36 litre V12, the fastest of all the "Spits" and also has a pressurised cabin so could go to 45.000 feet!
The video was taken in 2010 so it's not in it's usual colours; on occasion it also wears a 6 blade counter rotating prop! The owner is the guy in the sheepskin flying jacket. The "first flight" mentioned in the title is for the pilot, who is one of the Breitling jet display team. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdT7_qshR9w |

That was really great. I have always liked the Spitfire. Don't know why. Maybe because of the Battle of Britain. I just like it. Don't laugh but I like the C-47 too. My uncle flew them over the "Hump" in the CBI theater of WWII.

That would be the RR Merlin engine. I do like the P51, but would rather have a flight in a Spifire.

It wasn't entirely the Merlin..it was the Air Ministry's quest for a replacement for the Spitfire. They needed something with more range. The Spit didn't have a long range. The States came up with a "tweaked" P-40..that didn't cut it. But they requested 6 frames be sent to Blighty. When they married the frames with the Merlin, & tweaked it a tad further, they realized they had the makings of something great. Shortly thereafter, the MUSTANG was born. Another great kite.
