Now that my hospital bills are sorted I now have a surplus of cash and I am wanting to get started handloading.

What gear do you recommend me to get? And does anyone know of any online stores with reloading gear that delivers to Australia, because I have noticed prices for US websites are much more reasonable (the postage might get me though).

The problem of buying through the US is the exchange rate !  I have gathered many different brands of gear over the years & tried many different types of presses ! I think the stuff that LEE puts out these days is great value for money ,esp for somebody who isn't loading vast quantities of ammo .On saying this I load up to 800rnds per week for work alone & have owned a LEE Turret for several years now ! There are several LEE Kits avalible on the local market & there's a Bloke on E-bay (17 ackley ) who runs a store .I've done a fair bit of buisiness with him as his also a very good Gunsmith! He offers several of the O type kits at reasonable prices but I would also ring round to you Gun stores & see what they have to offer .

Hatchetman, I have the new Lee Cast Classic Press, and it has been getting some rave reviews from everyone. About $80 US if you're careful in your shopping. If you only load rifle, a single stage might do it, and the Lee cast classic is a real bargain at $69. If you load any small stuff I'd go for the turret press, it's faster and being able to set up the dies and leave them on the turrets is very convenient.

I started loading about 30 yrs ago, RCBS press and equipment. Got out of when I got busy with small children. Started again about 5 yrs ago with the Lee Anniversary kit, a little cheap but it all worked. When I found I was going to do a lot of reloading, I started adding bits and pieces, and about 4 months ago got the Classic cast press. Old man Lee worked on a" keep the price down minimal equipment to do the job" philosophy. Since the kid took over, they have brought out the cast presses, which are as strong or stronger than anything else out there. In fact, they say "cast iron" because that is what everybody thinks is strong because RCBS and Redding push it, but the new presses are actually cast steel made from old railroad rails. Much tougher and crack resistant than cast iron. The cast turret is larger than the old one, and will auto index with taller cartridges.
You can pull the index rod and single stage if you are a beginner or want to load for accuracy, or you can set the auto index and put out a lot of ammo. Not like a full progressive, but most users are putting out around 200 rounds of pistol ammo an hour once they get going. Add the pro auto disc and the new priming mechanism and it is slick. The press is about $84, and Cabellas and Kempf gun shop have kits set up for about $150 .
Go to the Lee site and watch the turret on the video,
http://www.leeprecision.com/html/HelpVideos/video.html and you'll get a better idea of the capability. Extra turrets are $9 and I have separate turrets for 9mm,45acp,303,8mm and 45-70.Never have to change dies and takes about 30 seconds to change the turrets. There are a lot of good presses available, but the Lee Cast turret is probably the best value going and I think the only auto-indexing turret available.

I have been offered a Hornady Lock-n-load single stage press and powder measure for $200 used in "very good condition" compared to a new lee classic cast press for $150.

Im guessing I wont be loading as much ammo in a year as you do in a week Dave so I think a single stage will do me just fine.

I have been advised to stay away from the alloy lee presses though, weather or not that was genuine or weather it was to sell me the more expensive press I'm not too sure. I have had reports of the lee reloader press snapping in half though.

I am also fine Hoadie, its been a week since my op and I am almost back to normal. The only part of my jaw that is still annoying me is my bottom right one.

It is right where I rest my cheek on a rifle stock as well so sadly no shooting for me last weekend.

Here's hoping for next weekend.

Its all right to be pissed at 1 in the arvo.

I recon it's ok to start at half ten in the morning because that's when the local opens. Ahh to be on an actual holiday again.

There's a time to be drunk? When we take the brother-in-law to the coast, I'll pick up beer for the eskie.  At 10am he asks if I want a beer? I say no, later. Same question at 10:30 and 11. By 4 pm when I go for a beer, they're gone.
I am so glad he lives 400 miles away!

The Lee Presses that have a very nasty habit of Snapping are the very Cheap C type ! My brother brought one on the cheap & wondered why I cracked up laughing & brought my Mates round to show what a Idiot looks like ! It Snapped on him whilst he was trying to FLR .308 brass ! The O types are good value though ,with the little extra on a Classic cast being a good investment !
