Just watched an awesome movie on Netflix. The Seige of Jadotville. Irish UN troops in the Congo. Lots of Enfields. AND an Enfield sniper rifle! Guess what? Guy behind the sniper rifle? Southpaw!!!

Watched the movie! Enjoyed it very much. Was not aware of that small part of Irish military history (as part of the UN)
Luckily my wife's favourite actor was playing the lead role so she enjoyed it too

The Congo, nasty fight. An Italian transport landed and the crew seized by rebels.
"Unfortunately, it was too late for the Italian airmen who had been taken hostage. As reported by Belgian civilians, all thirteen airmen suffered a gruesome death.86 This dire situation on the ground was not apparent in the quick recce fly-by on the first day. Apparently, the pilot saw the UN flags flying, the armored vehicles in good condition, and “deemed the situation on the ground normal”!87 From a good source (RCR WO) who was there with the Canadian contingent I was told the Italians were killed and eaten. |

I just watched this last night and went to post but see I am about 3 years late! I thought it was a new release. Maybe this brings the post back to the top so others may enjoy it. I loved the bar scene when the two commanders first meet - the Irishmen burned him good. Doesn't put the UN in a good position, and unfortunately I don't think much has changed. Great Movie.

Its darn near impossible to get any unbiased info on anything in Africa nowadays. But the Congo was a mess. I had a friend from South Africa & his father told me stories that would make your blood boil. He owned a construction company in Joburg but also had a working farm out in the country. They used a lot of migrant workers at harvest time & actually had a area for them with a circular layout. In the middle was a "neutral" area where the various tribes could meet & trade. around the outside were several communal traditional long-huts, one for each of the tribes. Apparently the arrangement was swell thought of & quite often the migrants would so overnight on their travels to trade goods & people. (an important hedge against inbreeding in a tribal culture). The place became a kind of ad hoc meeting center. Then the politics changed & it all was suddenly BAD! The rebels took to raiding the place when it was occupied to steal cattle & women. There were some nasty terror tactics used.
