Well. Looks like our Northern Rangers are finally getting their replacement for the Lee Enfield. Some Sako .308. I guess time will tell if it is as sturdy and dependable as the Old War Horse was. Kind of sad...

Never having used a Tikka I wonder how they're going to like the different bolt?
I remember my first experience with a Rem 700 I hated that "floppy" bolt. There's going to be a period of adjustment for sure! |

Quite a few Rangers were involved in the selection and testing of the new rifle. From reports they seem to like it.

I've shot a Tikka T3 .270. Very smooth bolt action. |

This question is mainly for my Canadian friends but open to all with an answer.
Is there anyway to approach the Canadian Rangers via some government viaduct and ask about some form of surplus buy out of these rifles? Right up a petition,we all sign it,and for pennies on the dollar,we combine any extra income we all have and state that we will purchase as many as we can so to preserve and protect the history of these rifles. |

Well, if recent past attitudes hold...you'd have a "snowball's chance"
A lot of folks wanted the Browning side arms they dispensed with. They ignored the pleas, & destroyed them. The Rangers will probably be allowed to retain their service rifles.(Since they deprive them of everything else!) Perhaps some of them may sell them off. (Then again - there isn't a whole lot of Rangers, either.) Guess all we can do is wait & see what Canadian Crown Assets disposal decides to do. If they sell any off - it will probably be out of the country. |

I'm hoping then that,if they do sell out of the country, they might sell to someone that lives in another country? Perhaps to someone living in Arizona.

I had read the Rangers would be allowed to keep their service Enfields. The rest of the inventory (parts, etc) would be available to the public. I suspect if this happens before we vote the Conservatives in in '19, the Liberals will destroy the remaining history.

The Brownings are still general issue. They will be several years before they are fully replaced as a replacement hasn't been chosen. Those being destroyed are frames and slides deemed beyond servicing. They are buying Sigs as a stop gap with both the P225 and P226 in inventory. My friend's son was in Special Operations Command and used a H&K USP.
The Rangers rifles are National Defence property and it would require a special administrative order to give them to individual Rangers. As of January this year no decision had been made with respect to their disposal. Once they are declared surplus their disposal is handled by GCSurplus, a branch of Public Services and Procurement Canada. I am not sure but perhaps ITAR may prevent any sales outside of Canada. Don't be surprised if they are sold as one lot including all spares. |

MacD:I read - as well - that the Rangers would be allowed to keep their Enfields. (Methinks it was either in Legion magazine or E'sprit du Corps magazine.)
Given the fact that they always had to supply their own snow sleds etc, it would seem the least they could do.(& when it comes to the LEAST they can do - our so called gov't takes that to new depths!) |

Perhaps and I would be all for it as I have worked with the Rangers before both on the Island and in Labrador. It can be done but the rules have specific requirements to be met with respect to the write-off and disposal of federal property. Also, if I recall correctly, Rangers are paid a daily allowance when using their snowmobiles or sleds during a patrol or other callout as well as being paid a daily wage. Having said that they are always the first to volunteer for community SAR and other emergencies. I suspect that some of those rifles were in the local patrols long before many of the people currently using them were born. If you can reference something that says they will stay there I would be most grateful to read same. It would make me very happy. |
