Thanks Goosic and Shamu. appreciate you taking the time to explain. I was not aware of that because I have not handled a Savage made Enfield.
The rifle in the original post has the number stamped on the mag', so thinking about it; I agree that it could be done at the FTR. If the rifle needed a new magazine it would not be selected for maker, just function. |

The Maltby mag is on the left, Savage on the right I currently have five of the Savage made magazines. The Maltby, Fazackerley, and BSA magazines that I have do not look like the Savage made ones. I mean ,they do,until you get to the bottom and the back at the bottom of the Savage, then it's different... |

Its the bottom seam. Many have a single clamshe!! construction with the left & right sides stamped out then welded together. If you remove the follower & spring you can usually see the seam on the inside, but rarely on the outside. The Savages (or many of them) have this "back-to-back Y shaped bend" & no weld.
There's also this odd, "Pair or short rails" on the back face, not sure why it seems to align with the cut in the front of the trigger guard though. You can just see the seam in the top (non-savage) one here. The other 2 are savage-made. rails on rear face: As you can see they weren't originally serialized from the factory, so I guess they were number stamped during the FTR as it had become SOP by then to match & serial magazines to rifles? |

Interesting! I wonder if magazines could have been supplied to Maltby by other manufacturers during wartime.
Could you please take a photo of your Maltby and Savage magazines to compare? I'd like to see the difference. I'm always keen to learn something new with these rifles. |

It's a Maltby made No4Mk1 that was transformed to No4Mk1/2 during an FTR (Factory Through Repair). The FTR details should be electro penciled to the left side of the original no4Mk1 marking on the receiver.
I believe we can see part of the electro pencil mark in your photo. Sorry Goosic, but I don't think the magazine is Savage. Looks original to me and numbered as the rest of the rifle. Hopefully she shoot's as good as she looks! Welcome to the forum! Zed.

Beautiful..Rifle - not gun.
Wish I had that in my collection. Well, not really..what I really want to finish it all off, is a Longbranch. You would think that living here - not far from Longbranch, I could obtain one at a decent $..Not yet |

Unless it had a different stock put on it,it appears to have went through a FTR at some time. The magazine is from a Savage.
Nice rifle... |

I recently inherited a No. 4 Mk1 from my grandfather. I've been doing quite a bit of research as to what exactly I have. I have had some trouble tracing the serial numbers and other markings. I would love any help getting a more specific idea as to what I have and what it is possibly worth (if anything).
What I do know: - It is an No. 4 MK1 - It has an "ENGLAND" early import engraving - The serial numbers on the the bolt, receiver, stock and magazine all match (AX 17242) - There is a "C" imprinted on the underside of the handle. - The rifle is in pretty good condition and shoots well. Thank you for the input!! |
