I picked up a 1940 lithgow today it had been Drill purposed , it has the magazine cut off in it as well which i thought was unusual for a 1940. Barrel has Big P stamped in it but no other marks other than the usual lithgow proof marks and a 44 stamp nearby the barrel actually looks very clean with no serial number it is painted green as well it has a non matching bolt .i will post some pictures in the nexts few days . I also. Have managed to come across 2 new old stock no1 mk3 walnut stock sets or a very good price as well .
If this rifle is a true Dp rifle it is going to become part of a role of honor tribute wall i am planning to do to pay tribute to each person in my family who served from the Boer war through to Vietnam it is going to be around 50 names on it .

lithgow actually returned to mkIII configuration of a sort after the mkIII* expediants were deemed not required , but in your case if its an original they were slow to change over , i dont think they agreed with the changes in a unaimous way ,

there are very knowledgeable lithgow folks here to give you a lot better info than i have , im throwing out a little of what i heard , im not one of those folks - im still looking for my first lithgow ,

Thr green or most likely khaki paint is a rust preventative applied in service. I’d suggest the large P indicates this. P for paint, but that is only my view, no official source to support that.
Is it stamped DP or only yellow painted at the muzzle end?

Look forward to pictures.

It is stamped dp on the receiver only not on the barrel it is also painted yellow across the stock rear and front forestock know and hand guard.. I have not had a chance to headspace yet but the barrel is bright shiny and very well grooved.

Ok no mistaking that’s a DP.

Regardless of barrel condition or headspace, it’s a downgraded to drill purpose only for reasons unknown. Still very collectable, will be very suitable for your display.

Yup, Drill Purposes (ONLY)!
Still a nice display piece though.

yes , please do not shoot this without getting it checked by a competent gunsmith - there is a reason it was downgraded to drill purpose and there are reasons the good bits were not salvaged if they were good r

BTW - homer is who i was hoping would hop in here , there are others , but he is a great source for your lithgows ,

all that said - please post some photos as requested above we would love to see what you have added to your collection ,

50 names on a Tribute Wall. Nice show of respect. Thanks to those that put themselves in harms way.
1940 Litgow might have seen some real action before becoming a DP.
