I acquired a sporterized Mk 4 by trading out an Ishapor for it.  To all the purists out there, I feel this rifle s too far gone to un-sporterize.

Its barrel is about 25 1/4 inches.  Measurement was taken by a rod placed down the barrel against the closed bolt.

I want to shorten the barrel to 20 inches, or perhaps 18 inches.  As the barrel is thicker at that point than it is near the muzzle, and am looking for options as far as moving the front sight back to the thicker section of the barrel.

If anyone had experience in bobbing the barrel down and re-locating the front sight, kindly let me know.

Something is wrong.
Is it a "No4" or a "Mk4".
Sorry to sound like a pain but, they are different rifles.

The Rifle No4 has a front sight with a parallel mount block on the end of the barrel (about 2" back from the muzzle) for the front sight & a receiver-mounted peep sight at the rear of the bolt raceway.
The No1 Mk III, has a barrel mounted leaf sight in front of the breech. The front sight is on an angled mounting block. (Very similar to your Ishapore).
Which are we discussing?

Which do you have?

Recently did the same thing on a rifle. Check out "Winter Project." Bobbed the barrel to 20" as it was worn out. Wanted the scout rifle look so I removed the front site, then remounted it on the fatter part of the barrel. It's about 1 1/2" from the muzzle. Shoots good. Bit of a bear to do (and kinda Bubba work) but me and all that have seen the results like it!

In my rifles's case, the non-adjustable peep-sight is behind the bolt.  Whereas the Isahapore had a rear sight affixed in front of the bolt.  Kindly let me know the correct jargon here. I thought No. 4 was the correct term.  Please elucidate me as to to correct term to use.

Think of it as "the mailing address of the post" if you like.

Your Ishapore is the Indian version of a No1 MkIII (or MkIII*)
The No 4 is a different rifle version.
There's a hierarchy of designation
BIG NEW model is "No"
Revision to an existing "No" a is "Mark" (Mk).
Minor tweak to a No something Mk something else gets a star (or two) so its always Rifle No(X), Mk (y) (*).
The Ishapore would be an SMLE (also known as a No1 MkIII*)
This is a No4 Mk2:

Sorry, forgot.
A No2 is a .22RF trainer & a No3 is the "American Enfield", a P-14 made on a totally different Mauser type action.

Yes, you have options. Get a diameter measurement of the muzzle at the point where the front sight currently is mounted. Cut the barrel at whatever length you want. Rent a piloted annular cutter that cuts the same diameter of the muzzle before shortening the barrel and use it to reduce the diameter of the muzzle, at the cut, to re mount the banded sight. These come with a bore pilot to keep the cutter cutting straight and square. No lathe is needed. Muzzle crown cutters can also be rented to square it up after cutting the barrel shorter.

The other option is to get one of those repro #5 front sight/flash hider units from GPC as they are .670 id and cut the cone and bayonet lug off. This can simply be slid onto the barrel at a point where it measures around .670 dia. If you dont like the sight ears, cut them off too.
