From:

I can't thank Scott enough for the way he worked with me through this purchase, custom every step of the way. This was exactly what I wanted & his work on the naggerd screws was excellent.

I wanted a project sight, but one that was within the range of equipment, supplies & skills I have & thats exactly what I got.
Thanks, Scott.

It was sold as "mechanically fine (which it is)" but cosmetically challenged. This turns out to be some minor surface rust, faded "Barney" purple bluing & so on. All I have to do is decide how far I want to go in "fixing" it up.
I'm not sure but I think I'll re-blue & then buff the in the white parts after I give it a strip, clean degrease & overnight soak in Evap-o-rust. Just trying to work my self up to oil blackening instead of cold blue. We'll see how brave I feel!Wink

I asked for a single-hole eyepiece as I'm going to swap a 6-hole P-H one from another sight I have on a .50 Hawken ML. The thumbscrew is Scott's own design able to be turned with a quarter, a good idea as they tend to loosen up sometimes. It comes with a mounting kit (not shown) including the 2 longer screws & the coil spring for the safety.

Well tis done.
I'm happy with it.
If you ever decide to tear one of the P-H sights "down to bedrock", let me give you a word of advice.
There's detailed stuff in there that you really need to be cautions messing with the P-H is a deceptively simple looking sight, but internally it very sophisticated. I repaired cameras for many years & this thing is on the same level of finicky precision engineering. Luckily its far from my first rodeo & I photo documented every step (thank gawd)!
Evil Smile
Anyway here it is, resting, which I like to do with anything I refinish as the new finish seems to need to set, cure, harden, or something.

Shamu. I contacted the bloke that is building my Lithgow. He does have several period correct peep sites for it. As our range is only 100 yds, he suggested rather than spend the same amount of money on a site as it would be for the rifle, might my money be spent better buying ammo and learning how to shoot? Can't argue with that... or a Brit!

Honkytonk:
Wait till you try the issue sights for the SMLE, you may change your mind! L-E fan that I am I'd never have bough my SMLE if it didn't have some kind of aperture sight! Its nothing like the No4 sight picture!

A square:
With the 6-hole eyepiece they're surprisingly good even with old eyes, as long as you keep to the small(ish) apertures!
Did you ever try the ol' pinhole through a bit of tape on the shooting glasses trick"? Its the same idea.

Shamu. I suspect you are right. That's why I put a Skinner peep site on my Thompson Renegade. Do the sites like your refurbishing require any drilling? Longer machine screws?

To fit the sight you need longer screws; but they do fit the original threads in the rifle. Scott Stonehill makes the screws; he supplied a set for my rifle.
Got great service from him.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

No D&T needed, they use the rear trigger guard screw & the safety spring bottom screw to attach. The existing screw & safety "donut" spring are recycled to put tension on the sight base where the sight attaches. Then there's a thumb-knob to lock it in place.

Scott is the guy I bought the sight from!
Beer

Yes he included the fitting kit, (2 longer screws, the coil spring for the safety & so on)!
He was excellent to deal with & worked closely with me every step of the way. I can't recommend him enough.

Well the project is as close to finished as it can get till I get to the range to actually zero this bad boy.

The finished project! . A.G. Parker No9g folding micrometer sight, from the 1910 ~1918 period at the Bisley Works. Fitted with the 6-hole eyepiece.

I reamed the smallest hole out to one step bigger than the biggest. I can never use the tiny one & so have effectively bumped every aperture up one size!

Installed & rough bore-sighted to my 1914 BSA ShtLE No1 MlIII!

The mount is the rare "close up" version, but as I like to mount the stock far enough back I don't have to break the weld to cycle the bolt its perfect for me!

I bought the rifle with a P-H 5A on it, but don't like removing the sight arm every time I want to pull the bolt, or dial in 53 clicks to clean!

Hopefully this folder will solve the problem in addition to liking very “Steam Punk”! The sight was refinished by me from its “Cosmetically Challenged” original condition, I think its just restored enough to match the rifle.
