Just finished rewatching a movie of an old English show, Dad's Army. Enfields and very funny! It was on Netflix.ca.

It's not a show, it's a British institution.
It is being repeated for the umpteenth time on UK T.V. The shows run lasted longer than the second world war.
I imagine that you watched one of the feature films, there were 2 made during the run on T.V in the 1970's and 1980's and a more recent one a few years ago.

It was the most recent remake. Loved it. Wish I could watch the original.

It was more than 'an original' it started as a weekly series and I have 58 episodes recorded on my T.V. memory.

It's very weird. I'm Canadian. Was raised an army brat. Dad was a Korean War vet. I went to England and Wales in '87 on a rugby tour. Fell in love with everything British! Have an old Union Jack I picked up at a army surplus store in '78 flying proudly in my garage. God save the Queen!

Honks,
I'm sure you can get the original series on DVD.
We watched them a while back.  (again!)

You watched the new remake with Catherine Zeta Jones in it?
That wasn't a patch on the old original series. Its online for the most part.
Most of the "Enfields" were P-14's or M1917's!

Which is correct for the Home Guard. Even the bayonets are the correct type.
All guns and kit are period, clothes, ration book, vehicles etc.  something the big film studios should take note of.

Did the P14 see much battle service? It doesn't seem to have took off, much like our own Ross rifle. This is another Enfield I know next to nothing about. My old hunting partner had one but it was installed in a thumb hole stock (yuck) had the rear site ears milled off and a scope mounted. Accurate, and brought down several whitetails.

The P-14/M17 had an odd place in history.
It was designed to replace the SMLE & the .303 as well.
It was a Mauser style action designed to fire a rimless .276 Enfield round!
Unfortunately history conspired against it & there was always another war or a shortage of funds from the last one & so the SMLE evolved into the Rifle No4 MK1 instead because development was cheaper that invention.

Shamu. I did read that Wiki article. History has a way of altering the course of nature.

Its true.
I really wish I could like the P-14/M1917, I shot 1/2 a season with a borrowed one when my No4 went into "lockup limbo" for ever, but, even though they are very accurate they're "klutzy" to me. Balance too far forward & a Mauser type bolt! even the "cocking conversions" don't make it as slick, or well fitting, as the L-E.
Ouch

So true. I cycled buddies P14 lots. Ok. But there will never be a Mauser actions as slick and smooth as a Lee Enfield. Just sayin'...

I too could never like the P-14.  Accurate, Yes, but clunky and heavy and slow and only 5 rounds....Ugly as well.

When I look at it's profile, my eye sees a bit of the US Garand in it's style.
