i signed off a bit ago for the evening , started going through some things intending to toss stuff i did not want anymore and pass along some things i knew i had that might mean something to a couple people who might care , found a box i forgot i had ,

in it was a lot of things i had forgotten my mother gave me nearly ten years ago , my fathers passport , drivers licence , social security card , some service pins for sertoma and lions clubs , fishing licences for both iowa and minnesota - a lot of this will go to my nephew ,
in a small box was  cuff links and a few things from his service -

WWII service ribbon, stateside service ribbon , pacific theater ribbon , thats missing the stars i saw on his uniform set but better than nothing , dog tags , and both his service wings as a gunner on the B-29 and a commemorative set of wings from the boeing 50th anniversary with the 20th emblem and a superfortress pin from that event as well , i do not recall seeing these before ,

i thought my father gave all of his service related material to the historical society back in the 80s , they sold off his fight suite which pi$$ed him off and me as well , i thought they had all his uniforms and pins/medals , but i guess not ,

i have his wings , the ones the government issued , i also have the 50th commemorative set of wings that boeing gave them at the seattle plant on the anniversary of the B-29 ,

i also found his pocket knife - i thought that had gone to someone else in the family years ago , its not so remarkable but it is what i recall as a kid both he and my mother talking about using at every possible occasion during his service and after , i think she gave it to him when he enlisted or for high school graduation , the events were only a couple years apart ,  that is a bit foggy for me , i just recall her being as attached to it as he was ,

i am going to put the wings , the service pins , the dog tags , and the knife with my WWII 45 ithaca and holster [ that holster was an item he and i searched for for a few years before he died - he wanted what was issued to him] i think that will add to my collectibles a bit of personal attachment beyond my seeking them out ,

thanks for hearing me out - i had to share it with someone

Always Great to hear stories like this. To many times I've heard and seen the story of who cares.
Myself I have the hat that my Dad was wearing the day he died. It has a set of Jump Wings and a few other items on it. I have it up in my craft room.
Also took a pic of my Dad and and the hat and a set of Jump Boots and put them up on display at a Machine Gun Shoot in Red Wing Minn one time. Should note my Dad was born and raised in Red Wing before he went off to join the service after Pearl Harbor was bombed.
Hope that more folks keep and remember their past.

Well done A-square.

That is pretty awesome! Those small things really carry a lot of weight to them with the memories they cause to call back.

thanks guys - i will see that nothing is lost again , 42rocker  , i can relate to your story here , my father and best friend from high school were on the west coast working in an aircraft factory when pearl was bombed , drove straight through back to iowa and enlisted , they drove in a snow storm part of the way , my folks used to say it was a risky trip but they did not realize how much more risk was to come ,

his best friend [my namesake] died in the early 60s of cancer , sometimes life has a way of shortening the story but i did get to know him fairly good before his last visit , that one was not something my parents shared much of , i did not understand at the time what was happening because they did not share it , i have fond memories
