I had some sad news this weekend.
Sadly, Bernard, who was 99 years old last month; passed away last week. He was in the local French Resistance; his Father was head of a small group locally. They had several airmen pass through there house to be repatriated during the war.
I got to chat to Bernard a few times over the last few years; and I feel priveliged that he spoke to me of some of his life from the wartime and before. He was not really one to talk much about it.
He told me that it was difficult for them to find food for the airmen, in particular one American would not eat pork; which was the only meat available at the time. Also he explained the the language was always an issue and a young lady(teacher) from the village was helping communicate. Some of his comrades were caught and shot by the Nazi's during the liberation.
He also kept bee's; and we spent a lovely afternoon with him and our neighbour back in 2019; extracting the honey from the honeycombs.
May herest in peace!

These people took tremendous risks to save many allied airmen.  I wonder if that would happen today....

Merci pour tout ce que vous avez fait, reposez en paix maintenant, monsieur.

Here's a photo of Bernard in his shed tending to his bee hives; extracting the honey in summer 2019.
