Yup.  I could see someone drilling out the tapered hole and using a roll pin if the hole had been damaged or the tapered pin had become stuck.

This is the sight base that was on my new and unused L8 barrel. Unmolested and still in the wrap.

Perhaps done differently for the L8 barrel?

Some day, I’ll check my two DCRA conversions with the Long Branch made 7.62 barrels.  I’d be surprised if they are different, as I thing the front sight was reused from the .303 barrel.

All I know with any amount of certainty is that I purchased a 1961 dated 7.62x51mm chambered rifle barrel made by Canadian Arsenal for use with the No4MkI action body. It was wrapped in wax paper when I received it as well. It was never installed on a rifle until I received it. When I removed the front sight protector it was then that I noticed the roll pin. I very highly doubt that it originally had a tapered pin. The key take away here is that it was a brand new, never issued barrel still factory sealed.

Here's another, "Never say never" in regards to the Enfield.
I have an unissued Savage stamped bolthead. I purchased it still in its factory sealed box. It is .637". No big deal there except there is no corresponding number to indicate that it is potentially a #2 sized bolthead.  Go figure...
