My real issue is this: The magazine cut off seems loose and moves up and down...so it seems like a shim would be the answer.

Has anyone had this problem before? I have the opportunity to order a part from a member in New Zealand but I'm not sure what would fix it?

I've seen the name Lance Lysiuk referenced but how do I find his books? Does anyone have contact info?

There were IIRC several "marks" of cutoff plate. Maybe you don't have the correct one?
Just a guess.

NO.  A 'shim' is not the answer.  The part is designed to work as it is.  If it doesn't work, it means that (a) the part is damaged, or (b) it is not the right part or (c) the part is not correctly installed.

The part itself is not hard to find:

I just did a search on eBay and found several, including some with screw.

Search ApexGunParts.   Search LibertyTree Gun Parts.  All of these have a magazine cut-off in stock.

You state that it "moves up and down" - is the magazine in place and fully inserted?

Is the screw present and fully engaged?

You state that you have a 'Long Lee'.  Which one?

See the pics.  Depending one which rifle you have, any one on the top line might be correct for your rifle.

All of the links I cited are for the SMLE - the bottom row.

First, identify your rifle.  Correctly.  Then you can go looking for parts.

If you have a Long Lee looks up Ian Skennerton's SAIS (Small Arms Identification Series).  You'll want #7 - the ".303 Magazine Lee-Metford & Magazine Lee-Enfield.   Pretty easy to find.

You can even order it directly from Ian.  http://www.skennerton.com/sais.html
50 pages, butt simple with diagrams.

Before you spend money on parts, spend money on a book.  In the long run, you'll be way ahead.

I would highly recommend getting Ian Scaton’s books. I just got the SIAS #1 and The Lee Enfield Book (a signed copy to boot) today from EBay.
Definitely worth it. I have an old 1907 Mk1* so I want to know everything about it.
Ian has a colleague in Oregon that sells his books as well - I can share his details if needed.

Years ago I met the father of a friend. He was a Marine in the Korean War that fought under General O.P.Smith and "Chesty" Puller during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir. (November 27, 1950) Marines call those who fought there...The Frozen Chosen. If you are interested in Military history and don't know the story you should look it up. It was considered one of the finest moments in the history of the United States Marine Corps. When I met this man I almost came to attention. I told him, he and the men like him were the reason I became a Marine.

Reading this thread in the forum and hearing from all of you who have so much knowledge and experience that you are willing to share so openly makes me want to be a better man. I've collected Enfield rifles for years but I have learned more in the short time I've been here than I have in years on my own! I joined the forum because of men like you...Thank You So Much!!!
