A 296 is a very high score for the 30 round GSMM match.  I’ve only rarely exceeded that.  But I have witnessed a good friend shoot a clean 300 with his MM AR. Guys that can do this have nerves of steel.

We held our final local club match of the year a few weeks back. Thought I was going to make my first clean 300 point GSMM but the last shot in the standing stage was 1/2 inch out of the 10 ring at 9 0’Clock, ugh.

Took me a long time and a lot of matches to be able to shoot 100-10x in prone,

Thanks for the kind comments guys.

I'm far from the best of the shooters out there with the AR-15 Service Rifle.  There are guys and gals (most of whom are or were in the Army Marksmanship Units, or on the USMC shooting team) that fairly regularly will shoot a clean 30 shot GSMM match (that's a Garand, 1903 Springfield, Vintage Military (like the SMLE/No. 4) or Modern Military Match; these are four separate classes of rifles that shoot the same match course of fire).  These are the guys who train the instructors in the US military and it's a full time assignment for them.

The more difficult match is the 50 round Service Rifle match shot "across the course".  That's
10 rounds standing slow fire at 200 yds (same as the GSMM)
10 rounds sitting rapid fire at 200 yds (not a stage in the GSMM),
10 rounds prone rapid fire at 300 yds (done at 200 yds in GSMM), and
20 rounds prone slow fire at 600 yds (done at 200 yds in GSMM, 10 rounds only).

No sighter shots are allowed for this match whereas 5 sighters are allowed for the 30 round 200 yd GSMM.  The top shooters in the 50 round match will score in the mid to high 490's out of 500 possible points.  That's far more challenging than the 30 round 200 yard GSMM; the score rings get progressively smaller (in MOA) from 200 to 600 yds), and you have to contend with the wind at 300 and 600 yds too whereas at 200 yds, it's very rare that the wind is significant.
