I Picked up Model 2A1 7.62x51 Enfield Rifle with a 16.25 inch Barrel. I can't find any info on one with this length barrel. I think it was cut down, but have disassembled it and If it was cut down, it was done so well I can't tell.

I posted this in another thread:
Not mine, I have a 2A and a 2A1, both unmodified. I got the picture off another old forum. I’ve looked into these before and here is a brief synopsis; these were not factory modded or originally built, this configuration was never used by the Indians. What I’d read is that a bunch of these were imported by Gibbs, which was bought by Navy Arms. Some of the rifles had bad barrels/rifling at the muzzle end. Instead of scrapping the rifles, they cut the barrels to a shorter length (19.2”) and built into either this mod (Tanker/Bulldog) or the Jungle Carbine style. The Tanker/Bulldog had a piece cut out of the fore stock just forward of the outer band. The remaining pieces were glued together. The had a habit of launching the nose cap down range. I bought my 2A1 with the intention of attempting this mod sometime down the road. Even picked up a couple of spare barrels. My gunsmith abilities are up to it, but not my woodworking skills. Like I said, this info came from the internet so it must be true😛. This was in the scout rifle thread several down from here. I couldn’t find somebody else’s posted link with a little more information.

Look carefully at the front band. Maybe even remove it. Many hid the join when the stock was shortened by having it under the band. See if you can wiggle or pull it off to the front. If you find ANY wiggle,or movement its a potential nose cap launcher! ![]() The problem was twofold. Iffy glues & oily wood. Clean, de grease thoroughly dry & re-glue with something like gorilla wood glue. if you can get a dowel section in across the join & then glue & pin it in place you should be OK.

Thanks for all the help. I removed the nose cap and front band and the stock does look like it was cut and glued back together with some kind of black epoxy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Yep, that's one of them! They can be fun guns for sure, but a little OVER LOUD & "Flashy". The only real problem, apart from the stock launching thing, is the very short sight radius.

yup , classic gibbs rifle mod , they thought they might sell more as a "special" item than as a simple indian 762 of recent [at the time] production , not a bad job really - ive seen a lot of duffle cuts that were much cruder and far less desirable ,
i many ways examples of these one offs might be billing a hole in a very complete enfield collection as examples of their durable afterlife ,

I always liked the looks of those "Tankers", be it an Enfield or Garand.

I have had a No. 4 MK1 for about 20 years and that was my only Enfield, But I Purchased a small military collection and ended up with 8 more Enfields. This cut down 2A1 was my favorite of the group. I am sure I will be posting more questions about the others when I get time. I also got a WW2 Enfield training rifle with the collection. Here is a list of the other Rifles
2 Grenade launching Rifles 1 more Ishapore 2A1 converted No.2 MK IV .22 No. 4 MK2 (F) No.1 MK III Lithgow 410 shotgun conversion |

these have always been fantasy rifles in all their forms but fun when done well , my big objection to them has always been the loss of a historic piece , when made from a sported item i feel less sad , the importers cut originals - makes me sad

Most of them were severely cord-worn, which was why they were cut down in the first place, to remove the muzzle end where the wear is. I think of them as a rescue rather than a destruction.

For the right price it would be a good choice, I'd still be worried about the pistol-length sights though.

In another post, I asked for retirement project ideas. One idea that’s been in my head is the “Bulldog” mod. I just like the look.
I just ordered a Sarco barreled receiver in .308 (2A/2A1). I can shorten and crown the barrel, and reposition the front sight myself. The most proper woodwork (shortening and reshaping the forestock as one complete piece) might be beyond my skills, however I’ll treat cutting the wood as if it was a duffle cut. I have most of the fidely bits already and extra wood. Stay tuned, I’ll start another thread once I start hacking sh*t up. Any ideas, suggestions or hands on advice is welcome.
