Made some more progress today by disassembling the bolt. It didn't want to come apart and I had to heat the Cocking Piece to get it to release. After apart I had to buff the threads repeatedly until the firing pin and cocking piece would go together with out too much force on my little $6 bolt disassembly tool. The threads were really tight and needed to be loosened up a bit.
I also drilled out the bolt knob. The way it looked before was like a giant stone club. Now it has some character. here's pics of the operation in the mill.    I also had to stone out a big groove in the sear. It was really deep and took me 15-20 minutes to stone out.   I may have to revisit this part as after reassembling the whole gun I was rewarded with a nice 8lb Trigger Pull! After some lubrication it reduced to a consistent 6 lbs. like to see more like 4 lbs. In any event there is very little creep and the let off is crisp. The first stage pull is very short. This trigger is completely different than the one on my #4 Mk1 Anyway here is some more pics of the project as it sits right now with most everything ready for final finish.    It looks pretty good in person and when all the exterior metal is blacked out and the Ebony Fore End Tip added I think it will be a good looking gun. Randy

You might want to re case harden the cocking piece front as its probably all removed if there was a big groove.

Shamu: It was pretty soft, not like the Bent which took me an hour to stone out two depressions which were not half as deep as the one on the cocking piece.
I was using a diamond carbide tool sharpening stone to do this. but still the material was soft. I think hardening it a bit might be in order. Sure couldn't hurt. Randy

It was one of the biggest no-no's of custom work done by amateurs "back in the day", stoning the face angle to lighten pull.
Unfortunately many of them were unaware of, or ignored the fact, that it was case hardening & they cut through it. The big clue is usually the trench! |

I just ordered a few parts from Sarco including another Cocking Piece. Also got a couple of screws and a spring. My Front Trigger guard screw was too buggered to fix and for $2 it wasn't worth messing with.

Just to bring this project forward I scored a couple of nice parts for this gun project.
I got a nice Redfield Series 70 Receiver Sight for this gun that will fit onto my adapter plates perfectly. I also have several other plates designed that will allow mounting of a Scope or Red Dot sight to the gun. I also picked up a Real Live Parker Hale Front Sight Hood off Ebay from Numrich for $12. It will be a nice finishing touch for the gun. I still have to build my oven for cooking the Cerakote and that has been hanging this and several other projects up. It's been brutal hot here in Ojai for the last 2 months and fiberglass and open pores is not my favorite combo. Randy

Slot is only 1/8" wide and sight base is 3/8" wide. It might make it but I doubt I can stretch it that far.

Good to keep it though, maybe you can use it on a future project? I need one for one of my #4 sporters that has a PH sight base but the rifle is in storage right now and I can't easily get to it to measure.
