Well ive decided that since the enfield can reach out to 1000+ yards well it should be allowed to. I just need to convince my dad to let me fire across the feild to the woods...600+ yards.
Here is what im going to get for my mount... http://cgi.ebay.com/SCOPE-MOUNT-FOR-ENFIELD-303-RIFLE-NO4-MK1-2-5-NEW_W0QQitemZ120372469273QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item120372469273&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1205|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318|301%3A1|293%3A1|294%3A50#ebayphotohosting I need some good scope suggestions. Id like a 6x type scope but could settle for a 4x. any suggestions? |

let us know how that works for you. No Gunsmithing thats a plus. If you going to shoot out to a 1000 yards you may look at 4x20 power leupold for a nice clear sight picture. That is a nice scope for the money.

Build yourself a decent backstop some old heavy timbers (old railway sleepers are great) and sandbags should do the job nicely. Then work up to the range you want to shoot at in100 yard increments. That way you'll get the feel of the rifle and be able to adjust the sights ( if they need it) and compensate for wind drift without scaring your dad / upsetting neighbours and maybe popping somebody walking round the wood. Ok it may be private propery but folks do wander without asking. Red flags will serve 2 purposes 1 they'll indicate wind speed and 2 act as a warning to anybody who strays on the land a sign up saying shooting in progress should also keep folks out.

The price is right for sure. Like tony suggested a back stop might be a good idea.

As Tony and Kodiak mentioned sand bags, there are very inexpensive if you buy a load of sand and bags, then fill yourself. Then you can replace as you perforate them with .311 holes. |

i will have to do that. There is a building back in our woods that is kind of falling apart. My idea was to build the back wall of it up and shoot into the wall of it. Timbers and plank wall should be good. Also id be shooting into a Medal plate, just for noise..

Firstly Tony, Kodiak and Cookie are all bringing up valuable points. One way to ease your dads concerns is get him a spotting scope, if he doesn't already have one. This will accomplish a couple things as you continue to push back on your yardage it will make you corrections and hit confirmations easier.
It will also ease his worries of strays rounds, and make shooting a family affair.
It will also let you focus on your shooting, your positioning, and get side tracked with looking for hits
Working your way back as Tony Stated will make your corrections easier, smaller, and you should be able to continue to hit your target as you back up. This will leave you less and your father able to focus more on the enjoyment of shooting as oppose to where the F*ck did that round go.
and one last comment the flag thing is an excellent idea, both for safety and for windage, if your using Commercial ammo be sure to check the manufactures ballistics characteristics, as it will help understand wind drift a you push farther back. it's a good idea to use a couple of different flags to give a better idea of what the wind is doing across the distance, if it shifting, dying off, or gusting.
In closing (ppphhhhewwwww take a breath..lol) if you present this info, and show your dad that you have thought about this logically, I'm sure he will have know problem with letting you improve your scope of shooting distances.

That can be a cause for concern, I would have told him it was a warning shot.

Concern??? I'd be terrified if my lad did that! There'd be a total ban on him handling any gun until I was sure the rules we have were firmly in place again. Ask USSRL he'll tell you from an early age he's had it dinned into him it's now second nature. |
