let us know how that works for you. No Gunsmithing thats a plus. If you going to shoot out to a 1000 yards you may look at 4x20 power leupold for a nice clear sight picture. That is a nice scope for the money.

Build yourself a decent backstop some old heavy timbers (old railway sleepers are great) and sandbags should do the job nicely. Then work up to the range you want to shoot at in100 yard increments. That way you'll get the feel of the rifle and be able to adjust the sights ( if they need it) and compensate for wind drift without scaring your dad / upsetting neighbours and maybe popping somebody walking round the wood. Ok it may be private propery but folks do wander without asking. Red flags will serve 2 purposes 1 they'll indicate wind speed and 2 act as a warning to anybody who strays on the land a sign up saying shooting in progress should also keep folks out.

As Tony and Kodiak mentioned sand bags, there are very inexpensive if you buy a load of sand and bags, then fill yourself. Then you can replace as you perforate them with .311 holes.

Firstly Tony, Kodiak and Cookie are all bringing up valuable points.  One way to ease your dads concerns is get him a spotting scope, if he doesn't already have one.

It will also ease his worries of strays rounds, and make shooting a family affair.
