I'm wondering if the scope mounts can be soldered in place. Something like the Williams SM-70. Will this hold up? Of course the point is to not drill the receiver.

you could solder a steel base onto the rifle. However, I believe the Williams bases are aluminum. Do you have a SMLE or a #4?

S+K do an excellent scope rail and rings for the No4. I have one. No drill, nice a solid.  |

I have an SMLE #1. There isn't much choice for this gun. Just the ATI, and I haven't heard anything good about it. I'm looking for a #4 in Bubbafied condition to sporterize, just so I won't have to mess up this one.

For a #1 I thin kthe only option would be one of the scout type mounts that affix on the rear sight base. (I'm frequently wrong, and I don't profess to know all that's out there)
However, if you do decide to solder a base on, keep in mind that the heat and flux will ruin whatever finish is on the reciever. I'd go with the #4 idea.

S+K do supply a "no drill" rail for a No1 Mk3: http://www.scopemounts.com/index.html?main.html#. look under "Ex-military" and then "Pictures" I can't vouch for it personally but the one they supplied for my No4 has been a great success and their after-market support has been very helpful. If you're talking to them say Derek from Scotland recommended them. |

Thanks! That's a nice looking mount. Does it look to be a little tall? Has anyone used it with the original stock?

The Addley scope mount is a smith-less scope mount that holds zero, best part is that it seats low and when you use there recommended scope rings it seats really nice, also what sold me was that fact that I was able to remove the bolt anytime I want without disturbing the scope mount in any way. they are on ebay and they have a web site as well.

An addendum to this thread; I purchased a slightly used S&K mount on ebay. I don't know other peoples experiences with this, but I'm not impressed. At the front, it has a very loosely fitting steel ring that goes around the front of the receiver. What is the point if it is loose? At the rear is a piece of steel held by a bolt that clamps on the charger bridge when tightened up. On mine, when I snug up the bolt, it pulls the rail off to the right by quite a bit. Apparently, the cast surface of the bridge is not exactly square, and since the front strap doesn't do anything, it throws it off.
