Ran into a Old Mate last night /this morning at the Chiller & got to talking . I supprized to find he was using a Parker Hale reburnished .303 with a Synthetc stock at work last night! His normal working rifle was in being rebarreled & he decided to take the Old Girl out for a shot! I have'nt seen a .303 used in years on Roos  & it was quite a shock for a couple of the younger shooters as they came in to unload to find what we were talking about ! You'd think that he'd discovered something new the way they went on about it ! Mind you it's a little pricey in my opinion to be using every night (& a little too much gun ) But he has had a whisper in my ear about a small contract he has lined up for Camel meat ! When the weather cools down a tad I might have to put in a week or two with him I think (as it will be well worth my while )

Hey  Dave, I am a reloader usually but was in a pickle today, had to go shooting, had no ammo loaded, had to buy from a store. I have not done this for a while and your comment about .303 being pricey is right on. I paid...............$25 u.s. for 20 rounds of remington Shocked Sure, it is great hunting ammo, but I was hunting paper, not animals, it was the only british .303 I could find. I need to buy more powder and primers. Sean

Im guessing the .303 would have made short work of the roos, I would probably use it if I came across some one day and I had the .303 and tags.

You pro-shooters normally use .223's dont you? I can imagine how much your consumables  cost would be lowered because you would be using a pill in the 50-60grn range and nowhere near as much powder.

G'day Sean & welcome to the Mad house ! I can't remember the last time I had to buy Factory ammo (& cringe at the thought of having to do so ) Even reloading for the .303 in my line of work the cost Vs return per Animal taken so far a Roos are concerned really cuts into the profit margin !

Yeah HM the .223 is the main  stay of the industry these days. There are a few 22/250s floating around  & I have a .220 swift that I use on ocassion  ,there was a time when .243/6mm s were  all the rage ,I date back to the 25-303  as the main stay (& still use one on windy nights )We buy every thing in bulk  5kg tins of Powder ,10,000 primers at a time & projectiles by the 1000 0r more if we get a good price on them Back in the days of the pet food market .303s were the rage as there was plenty of milsurp ammo going cheap & as we only took the Butts chest shots were allowed! But then again we used Hornets & .22lr on roos as well !

Neck shots mate ! Right at the base of the skull ! For Human consumption,it has been deemed since 2000 that Gut shots are illegal ! The problem with the head shot is a direct Brain shot causes a Roo to do a backward filp (sumersalt ) which to a observer looks pretty impressive ! To say nothing of being funny ! The thing is though it breaks the tail & bruises up all the meat in the rump down grading it to pet meat ! I was once accused by a new manager (who did'nt know sh*t from clay ) of having Gut shot everal roos due to the bruiseing !
I asked to be shown the entry holes & behold ......No bullet holes in the Rump ! This is why I'm always somewhat dubious about certain Roo shooters who talk of 600mtr shots !!!!!! 200 is a bloody long shot for these tired Old eyes of a night !

Second that Dave , I used to be able to hit a man torsoe at 300 meters with open sites on a m-16 a-2   wish i had a 300 meter range to practice on right now. My eyes are still what they were when i was 22 , and i'm 40 now! Top of the hill and going over --- will look for ya on the other side!!!!!!!

Mate ! I wish I had younger eyes sometimes ! It's more a case these days of sheer experiance & the fact I don't really think of what I'm doing anymore ,it's like working on a assembley line ! Different Blokes comment on the fact that I always use the neck shot on animals like camels (cause it works !!!!!) It'snot that I'm a great shot it's just a case of I've been doing it for years & there' no excitment ! Young Craig Strong is a amazing shot ! His only in his early 30s & if he says his shooting at 400 I belive him ! Yet Old Bob fisher with a 303-270 regularly blows a roos head off (Literarly ) at 300 mtrs & his in his mid 80's !As for me it's200 on average with the .223 ! I can hit em further out with the swift or the 25-303 ! Camel  with the .303 I'll take on with iron sights at 100-150 & out to 200-250 with the scope !

Dave it sure is nice to talk with some one that actualy knows what a rifle is capable of , distance speaking that is. I see these Boys down here using .30-06 for 100 yard or less shot. youv herd me rant on about that before.
Most people here think they need a big bore to hunt our little swamp Deer.

The guys who brag about long range shots don't tell you how many misses they have or how many wounded animals are left to suffer mate.  Its 1 thing popping paper at 600 yards but a hell of a difference with a live animal. We all know its only got to move its head a couple of inches and you got a clean miss or a wounded beast  to find. I don't say its impossible but I would suggest the guys who claim to shoot at 600 study a tape measure and then actually measure out 600 yards.
  I wonder if they tell their girlfriends/wives 1 centimetre= 1 inch?? Evil%20Smile
