Hi thanks for the add to the site. I recently bought a no4 mk 1 savage and have found the magazine is very loose for some reason. It falls forward and causes the front of the round to jam up against the receiver. Was wondering if this was any common sort of fault with them. Its definitely a no 4 mag and the catch looks good but when the mag is fitted and i push it tight against the top of the receiver i can slide the mag back and forwards about 2mm

Welcome from Phoenix Arizona.
Couple of questions first. Is the magazine matched to the rifle? Does it have the same serial number as the receiver? Is it a Savage made magazine? Is the auxiliary spring still attached to the front of the magazine? Does the trigger guard have a square S stamped on it anywhere indicating that it was made by Savage?

Hi the magazine is a no4 and it does have a square s stamped on it as does the trigger guard. I can not see any serial numbers on the mag or the trigger guard though. the auxiliary spring is still in the mag and in one piece. the main spring also looks good. there is a bit of a dent at the rear of the magazine near where it sits into the trigger guard. Ill try to remove that and see if that helps. other wise i might try to get a new mag Confused

There was always a small amount of detail fitting with them, which was the reason for matching numbers in the first place.
I'm guessing the "small dent" is somehow related to the problem. Maybe this will help view of the back of a No1 (right) & a No4 (left) magazine?

There are very tiny differences in height of the magazine catch on the magazine itself. Definitely try to get rid of that dent first. That will be the logical step. If it is right where the catch is on the magazine, that would be why your magazine is falling forward.

Hi thanks for every ones help.  I straightened out the dent and the mag sat in nice and tight, but it wouldn't feed correctly and at first was hitting the bolt. after spending ages trying to sort the feed problem i gave up and i bought a new magazine. The difference is great it fits nice and tight and feeds very well. I will try to set the old mag up to look like the new one now i have some idea how the feed lips ect look. Thanks again everyone.
