I was recently given still more older 303 ammo in cardboard cartons, some 1942 date and some 1950s dated HXP.
I noticed on the packages they are in packs of 48, I asked the question why ? At the club and was told it was to do with Lewis gun magazine capacities and the cartons would either be 48 for normal mags or 96 for the double stack aircraft magazines. Do any of you guys know if theres any truth in this theory please? ATB Martini

Do you collect only military box or all boxes, non military?

I read somewhere that the carton was sized for fabric belted ammo, but that seems to be a small belt. Or perhaps a cloth bandolier of 40 rounds?
I think the Lewis gun mag held 47 rounds.

No I dont collect packaging although people seem to ask me to take rounds and sometimes they are in cartons, I do collect rounds. I never thought of the cartons being of interest to people before I read a pot on here. At present all I have carton wise is one 48 round which had been openened by the person who gave me it

I remember vaguely reading it was so the cartons fitted completely into the spam cans & the the existing outer boxes because they fitted the panniers for mules. I have no idea if its true though.
