Don't you hate it when something turns up you have never seen before?
LERA's (Lee Enfield Rifle Association) club secretary has just posted this picture on our Facebook page, the rifle, an L39A1 is one of our club rifles which tends to stay in the armoury rather than being used. It's the Parker-Hale 5c sight that is unusual, I've looked through my collection of Parker Hale catalogues and can find no mention of a 5c "2" model. It's in 1/3rd MoA which equates to 0.1 Milirad; there is a suggestion that these may have been made for South Africa. The fact that it's fitted to an L39 makes me wonder if the services were experimenting doing target rifle shooting in Mils? Your thoughts would be appreciated! ![]() |

That’s a new one to me Mick.
I have a PH 5C/D which has 1/8 minute clicks, but not heard of one with 1/3 minute clicks. I thin the milrads is the best explanation.

I do wonder if it was produced at a time when the UK was going decimal and metrification was a big thing in schools; in the meantime the world of shooting stayed with MoA. We have owned this rifle and sight for some years now and nobody has noticed that it's out of the ordinary...says a lot about the membership of a club with an interest in all things Enfield! Your 5cD Geoff; often seen accompanying the No.8 training rifle over here. |

Yes the 5C/D was intended for the .22 trainers. But why 1/8 minute clicks would be necessary at 25 to 50 yards? One click would move the bullet impact by about 1/32 of an inch at 25 yards. Don’t think the No. 7 and 8 rifles were that accurate to need such a fine adjustment.

It seems to have been a trend at some point for 7.62 shooters? My Central #4 set for 7.62mm is actually 1/3 click-stops too. It was driving me bonkers figuring out if it was 1/2 or 1/4 clicks but neither worked out right when I tested it. Then I heard about 1/3 clicks & it fitted! It doesn't really matter as I don't use Mk7 Ball even though I shoot .303 & so don't use the marked ranges anyway.

The first mention of 1/8th MoA clicks being offered on the 5c D sight, (that I can find) is in the 68/69 P-H catalogue Geoff.

STOP PRESS!
I've now been informed that the sight "may" have 1/4 MoA clicks after all making my first post completely redundant and putting out false information. I won't take the post down just in case anybody can shed more light on it, until I can examine the sight myself I'll reframe from further comment. I do however have other thoughts on it...

The elevation “MOA” scale is definitely different with the moving scale having index marks from 0 to 6 (not 0 to 5) and major index marks on the fixed scale every 6 MOA rather than 5 MOA. If that is actually MOA and not something else.
One way to verify is to measure the distance between the fixed scale MOA marks with calipers and see if they are different than the regular 5C. Then count the clicks to raise the sight a fixed distance on the scale. |
