Topic: Bedding and POI change (holy cow!)Posted: March 11 2025 at 7:03am |

After months of a few minutes here and a few there, I've finally finished epoxy bedding the sporterized 2A1 that my brother gave my son., and after a very brief validation it appears to have been very successful. Only one 10 shot group and that was from unsupported prone with no sling, but sub 2" with multiple overlapping shots...even accounting for my general rustiness. I'm sure the groups will tighten up when I shoot it from a rest.
Here's the hitch though. The POI shifted upwards so much that even with the elevation turret on the scope cranked all the way down, the rifle is shooting nearly two feet (!) high at 50 yd, which was as far as I could go with the size target I had with me... POI must have changed by 40-50 moa! The rifle has an old ati scope mount on it that looks like a 20 moa offset mount. I need something different obviously... Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

Seems unlikely that bedding could have that much effect. Are you sure something has not moved in the scope mounting?

Well, remember it's been sporterized so all bets are off, and barrel tension is kinda a non item at the moment.... The stock is an ati composite unit and was made for a slightly different model (#1 mk 3 if I remember correctly but not sure) the area around the Knox form was a few thousandths too small so the rifle didn't seat properly at the action screw, and as a result, the mid band was pulling the barrel down significantly. To add to that the way the stock was constructed, the draws didn't even contact the receiver and there was a solid 3/16" gap between the stock and the rear of the trigger guard initially.... I'm not surprised that there was a significant change. But I am surprised at the magnitude of the change for sure.
Anyway I need to order a different optic mount. I'm a little wary of the b square units due to the aluminum construction, but they are cheap and designed such that I could redrill to change the zero elevation. I know that there aren't many options but would love recommendations for alternatives. Thanks.

I’ve used the B-Sauare mount and they work fine. I had to mill out a bit of material from the bottom surface of the mount where it sits on the charger bridge to increase the POI. Did this in a drill press with a flat bottom cutter. For your rifle, you may need to shim it.
Sounds like the entire barreled action was moving within the forend before you bedded it, that would explain the large POI shift you got after bedding it.

Agree on that, and the barrel was definitely being pulled downward by the mid band... Still and all, getting everything back to right Id have expected to have the POI to at least be within the range of adjustment of the scope. Unless the ati mount has some adjustment that I can't see (I haven't removed it) Its hard to fathom having to correct the point of aim so significantly under any typical circumstances. I have a set of Z-rings laying around. I'll probably start by tossing those on with maximum correction just to get things good enough to go shooting. Some range time cant hurt anything! |
