growing up i lost a couple great grandparents early on that i actually knew , i was in single digits then , a  a favorite teacher , i was barely oin double digits , then later it was grand parents i was in my teens ,
ive since lost relatives , a best childhood friend , one of my most treasured later friends , and my FIL & MIL , a BIL , and a neice ,

there was a time when i didnt think much about this but in the last few weeks we lost another friend , one of my daughters teachers early on that married into our circle of friends , we also lost her son to suicide , for many years i thought i would experience losses in VN but i didnt , none of my friends or acquaintances died there , i realize im of the age when we start experiencing this often - used to be grad parties , then weddings , now funerals time to start checking the obits to see if im still around

the thing that struck me here is that all but a couple in the list above were my age or younger , some a great deal younger than i am now , its starts to make you realize where in life you are at ,

The thing is, we never know when the bell will toll for us!
So it's not something that is negative, but should be seen as an encouragement to enjoy what you have, with who you have.
Last week I heard that an ex colleague of mine passed away. He was 33 years old. Died in his sleep, the autopsy found out he had a major heart defect and apparently it was rare to last as long as he did.
He was a really nice guy and a good technician. Very sad indeed.
Instances like this make you realise that every day is actually a bonus!

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

i agree , we need to look for everything good in our lives and strive for the best we can get from it at the least to enjoy it ,
im sorry for your loss , i know these things can also weigh on us , but in your case it sounds like he was someone you liked , celebrate his life and live yours well , thats what im trying to do - sometimes  verbalize too much

glad to see you here today zed

I pray for family members, friends, and people I service with in the Army.

I have two ex wifes who have passed. I even pray for them.

I have lots of new friends who I enjoy and Grandchildren.

It's the inevitable passage of time.

Parents and grandparents all gone, but none before their time so that's a good thing.  One of my older brothers died of Mesothelioma and a nephew killed riding his bicycle, they were both too soon.

Ex-wife gone a year and a half ago under hush-hush circumstances although we were all told "It was unexpected and she didn't suffer much".  She was a life-long smoker so if I had to hazard a guess that might have been involved.

In the long time friends department I've been very lucky as only a few of that large group have passed, two to motorcycle accidents.

Myself, I hope I'm good with God and I try to be an example of Christian love, charity, and grace although I know I fail miserably at all three sometimes.

I enjoy interacting with people.

Go to a small town grocery store, do my banking in person, go to the Gym three to four times a week, and shop at Wal-Mart for a good laugh.

Still enjoy a few gun shows a year.

Have friends over to shoot pigs in the back yard.

I think of this from time to time, especially my mother and father, and grandparents. I have a few aunts and uncles left, but most are gone.  I was looking thru a family history book the other day written by my Uncle (who is now gone) and it brought back many good memories.

Last night, my sisters and I were texting about my Dad’s mother’s father and his father. He came to Canada in 1863 from England on the Anglo Saxon sailing/steam ship.  It sank in heavy fog off the coast of Newfoundland with great loss of life.  My GG Grandfather was one of the lucky survivors, he was 36 years old at the time.  His wooden tool chest was recovered (it floated to shore) and I have it along with some of his wood working tools.

My X died a few years back. There was a time that would have even cause for celebration, but I just felt sorry for her.  She had a difficult life, most of her own doing.

The shocker to me was my mate "AIF". He was briefly a member on here too. We were born within a month of each other.
The Mrs. says we were "Brothers from another mother" & it was true.
I was talking to George one evening for a while & we hung up & turned in for the night.
I'm in Md, He's in Arkansas.
A couple of hours later at Oh Dark Hunrett the phone rang. It was his very distraught wife calling to tell me he'd passed suddenly & unexpectedly.
Massive aortic embolism while taking a shower.

Sorry for your loss.

I remember the M60 series with a smile.

The M60 could take out a T72 all day long.

All for the benefit of the "Ostees" who surveilled their parking lot constantly.
Once, someone who shall remain nameless, cut a whole sheet of ply into a giant Bowie knife blade & painted it, then they strapped it to the main gun tube.
Then there was the odd-shaped shipping container for gawd knows what. They found anything unidentifiable, plumbing parts broken TV antennas & so on. they attached them al over it, painted it black & slapped a big trefoil on it, then stood it on the engine deck!

We had toe a little more subtle.
Gorilla head masks when working in the transparent nose cone station, little gibberish signs for them to translate, many of the Il-28 crews didn't read or speak English. They'd grab hand-held pictures & break off surveilling us to go & get it translated.
