Trump started the tariff tiff. 51st state is not a "spoof". Trump's claim that USA subsidizes Canada to the tune of 200 billion dollars is a complete load of hooey.

Well, in my experience Canada started a "tariff tiff" back in the 1980's when both Federal and Provincial prices to harvest timber on Crown land (known as "stumpage" fees) presented an unfair subsidy on Canadian softwood exports. This issue has been a thorn in the side of Canada/U.S. relations ever since and has been a cause of constant friction between successive administrations. Currently, just in lumber exports Canada enjoys an approximately $22 Billion surplus annually so it's not just all about oil.

As I recall, the softwood issue twixt USA & CAN was brought before the world court. IIRC, the court found FOR Canada in the issue like 3 times.
US claimed that CAN was harvesting wood on Crown land & paying less than value for it. That was found to be false. (Just sayin) |
