nice , a couple there ive not held first hand and one [1A1] ive not seen first hand ,
i once had a mk3* , a 2A , a 2A1 , a 410 traditional chamber , and 410 Commercial chamber , along with all of the bayonets , you sir have an extremely nice collection of ishys

The interesting thing about the first two rifles is that they both have South African military markings. I have also come across others similarly marked, the latest of which was dated 1941. Although I have so far found no archival evidence, I strongly suspect that they were originally imported from India during the Second World War for use in the North African campaign.

Indian troops served in N. Africa, so do you think the arms were left behind when they returned home?

That is a possibility, but seeing that the South African troops needed rifles to take part in the campaign, I believe that they are more likely to have received them beforehand. India manufactured complete rifles; South Africa did not and transport from India was probably safer than from England where there was also a shortage at that time.

Yes indeed Terry, India Did produce a staggering amount of rifles, many for the use of others. Just made me wonder with Indian troops also being deployed.
