My point was just to acknowledge the dangers of an overcharged cartridge using my experience only shamu. No more, no less...

Since many of you have traveled the road of parts replacement and SMLE disassembly, I will pose an issue. This same 2A1 requires replacement of the extractor and spring.
Parts headed my way. BUT-I do have a VERY stubborn extractor screw, and my thinking is that the original extractor spring may be exerting pressure on the screw shaft. The screw slot is starting to get burred, and it's time for second opinions. Enfield experienced gunsmiths seem almost non-existent here in this area. |

Very conservative loading practices used, and will be continued.

I own a 2A that I take to the range from time to time. I was initially blissfully ignorant of the issues with the 2A and action body warping but soon read about that on this forum and others. I imagined I dodged a bullet as I was shooting near maximum .308 Winchester handloads in it with 168 grain SMKs. Sometimes God protects fools and no unpleasant incidents occurred. Now, I only shoot factory 7.62 NATO or mid-range handloads with pulled M80 147 grain bullets.

Using 41.7grns of IMR4064 or 42.0grns of IMR4895 under a 168grn Sierra MK with a C.O.L. of 2.830" will generate pressures with within the safe range for use in an Enfield rifle. My 7.62mmNo4Mk*...

*DO NOT REPLICATE THIS LOAD IN YOUR ISHAPORE 2A OR 2A1!*
I was torching off 46.5 grains of BL-C(2) under a 168 grain SMK until I learned better. *DO NOT REPLICATE THIS LOAD IN YOUR ISHAPORE 2A OR 2A1!* |

I wouldn’t shoot that load in a No. 4 7.62 conversion either.

The 2A1 rifle mentioned much earlier with the pressure excursion issue has been returned to the active list, albeit with caveats. NO cast bullet handloads.( It was out today for the Memorial Day weekend -targets.)
Use of FMJ reduced loads with 147-150 gr bullets ONLY. Extra care used in the reloading process to insure against errors. Mind the process without distractions. Hodgdon puts out a "60% rule for H-4895 powder", intended for VMR- vintage military rifles. I think the Ishapore 2a and 2A1 rifles deserve a special consideration as to both handloaded ammunition and any "unknown source" ammunition. IMHO, both the 2a and 2a1 rifles due to their history of manufacture, heat treatment, and bolt/receiver strength tend to operate best in a narrow pressure range at approximately 40 K-45 K psi range area well below modern 50K + psi levels. Lighter bullets along with pressures comparable to 30WCF and 30/40 Krag are safer and more appropriate. |

Hodgdon Powder is now the large parent company for a number of smokeless
powdermanufacturers/smokeless powders. They market a new Accurate powder, LT-30, which was made specifically for the 30 BR-Benchrest cartridge and rifle. I have tried some in my 2a1 with 140-150 gr spitzer bullets. It burns clean and produces accurate loadings. With a 147 gr bullet, I started out with 30 grs. I stopped at 32 grs with velocity at about 2400 fps. Still doing research and loading with this accurate powder. My rifle and loads... Your results may be different. OP results and opinion only, |

This rifle is still functioning well with 147-150 gr bullets carefully
handloaded/assembled. Bore is in excellent condition. Velocity held to standard factory or reduced versions. |

How did you eventually get the bolt to release? Was the bolt body bent?
I’d be nervous using this rifle, even with mild loads.
