Quite a lot of my deer stalking is near to houses. I'm considering getting a sound moderator for my No 4 Parker Hale Supreme.
Has anyone done this before? I'd be interested to hear what you fitted and how it worked? |

Hi Flanker!
is that legal in UK? No way in Germany, complete illegal. By the way, I think that the sound of a rifle cartridge cannot be surpessed efectively and preserve load performance at the same time. |

There used to be a requirement for "sound moderators" a while back. It was to do with something called the "Noise Abatement Act", which said you couldn't make noises over certain decibels in some areas.
No one bothered to check if a shooting range in one of those areas was over the limit but at least one club I was in required sound reduction to comply with the law. He's in Scotland, though so the laws are probably different up there. |

You'd have to have the front sight removed the barrel screw cut then get the gunsmith to fit the front sight on to the thread protector so it will line up accurately when you use open sights.

Moderators cut down on the muzzle crack as the bullet leaves the rifle. They will reduce recoil slightly but if you're mounting the weapon correctly the recoil is not a problem. I have moderators on my ticket for 22 222 243 and 308. We use mods mainly on the 22 with subsonic ammunition for vermin and rabbit control. A moderator isn't a requirement for hunting unless the land owner insists or you shoot near a built up area where noise can be a problem for the inhabitants. |

A removable moderator mount can be attached to the barrel using high strength Loctite (or epoxy or something).
This one is on a 7.62x39 which has a non concentric barrel OD (the barrel appears to have been straightened after it was profiled! There was not enough muzzle diameter for a shoulder for the suppressor to register on either). It doesn't take much to cut the muzzle blast and recoil can be reduced by a large factor. Not all of it but so much that rifle hold no longer matters. Muzzle lift still exists though due to the slow push of escaping gasses like a rocket engine.
I built an over-barrel suppressor for a 243 that made it sound like a suppressed 22lr HV with a sharper bullet crack. It made a hissing sound instead of the muzzle blast. It was weird in that there was little noise near the shooter but lots of echo from the bush an hills. It was inaudible to someone else on the farm just over the hill. A 303 bullet at moderate velocity can't be silenced but is not all that noisy.
