Im with you, I didnt know about the no1 but my hunt for a rifle like a Sharps in 45-70 w/o the almost 2k price of a repro Sharps brought me to them, then i saw it in .303. Im in love, after I get my Ruger Scout im saving up for a Ruger No1 in either .303, .308 or 45-70(cant decide)

That is a beautiful rifle, but I'll be honest with you and say that it is the design, aesthetics and smooth action of the Enfield that I love more than the .303 round itself. Though I hunt with the .303 and respect its ballistics, there are many other rounds out there which are superior in versatility, reloadability and availability. That is why I am looking for an "Enfield" in .308.

that would be ideal, a No4 Pattern Rifle just sportier in .308. All i can find is the 2A Enfield which are modeled after the Mk3 and Im not a fan of those sporterized

about half what was quoted above because i got it from a very good friend , he had it for a year or so and never shot it , im intending to load and shoot it for the cowboy long range side matches , i just gotta set up the rock chucker and work up a load and see if i can hit anything ,

If I could have a non Enfield .303 rifle of my choice it would be the Winchester 1895 Lever action military carbine.
These can be had in both .30-40 and .30-06 but the .303 is probably the best chambering. The action has proven to be unsuited to much post 1906 .30-06 military ball and even some early sporting loads, not to mention maximum pressure 06 loads. This is still a problem even with some reproductions made of modern steel. The .30-40 and .303 chambered 95 gaves no problems, and of the two the .303 is slightly more powerful in its standard loadings, with a wider range of factory ammo and some decent milspec ammo still available. The .303 is also easier to find most anywhere than the long obsolete .30-40. The Ruger single shots are fine rifles of their class. If I was in the market for a single shot this would be a fine combination. Some have reported that the bores of the Ruger .303 were a bit on the loose side. If so they missed a great opportunity to demonstrate just how accurate the .303 can be with good bullet to bore fit.

Sayak, if you like the 303, you would love my SMLETINI. From the butt to the front of the action, its a Martini Enfield, from the action forward, its a No1Mk3. No originals were hurt in this since i started with parts. Why did I do this? There was one in the Pattern room just like it! Got to see a SMLE with anti aircraft sights like some jap rifles. Best of all, got to hold a Nock Volley gun (of course wearing cotton gloves)

Oh my goodness. That is nothing short of gunporn! Give me more.
 The 303 Brit cartridge is as reloadable as any other cartridge out there and is actually a little better than the 308 in that it has a longer neck and a longer throat for a longer OAL which gives more case capacity. In a modern, strong, single shot rifle and with hand loads it is actually more powerful than a 308. Which really means nothing since the 303 Brit is plenty powerful as a hunting cartridge as it is. But what makes it better is that the 308 with its short action and magazine limits itself with heavy boolits because the heavies protrude into the powder space (short OAL for the 150gr bullet it was designed for). Also, earlier 308's came with a slower twist which further limits the bullet weight. Just saying the 303 Brit is not a bad cartridge at all.
