It would sit against the crown.  Check out an ealier post about using a 9mm punch and a press.  The amount of force required concerns me though so I'm not going to rush into anything.  The path of least resistance may be taking it to a smith to remove the barrel.

The accuracy issues came from the lightening cuts in the barrel.  The armourers determined that the issues were similar to the ones they saw in No.1 rifles where the bolt face wasn't true to the chamber wall.  The flex of the barrel at the chamber as it got hot mimicked that No.1 issue.  Ian explains it in his shooting video.

Not being in the factory at the time I could not be certain, but would assume, they would be in keeping with the mass production methods of the day, I have found that the three I have done were machined accurately to .600" with smooth finish, interference of perhaps .0005", no taper.  They would most likely been assembled in large arbor press - possibly gear and pinion with a long handle and lots of leverage - and a jig that kept correct timing/orientation with receiver.  Drilled and pinned last.
My Feelings are that the reported troubles armorers had with keeping zero was because this is the only (WW2) Enfield that had a fully free floated barrel.  No support anywhere. when using bayonet during day-to-day soldiers training.  The bedding points, draws and recoil lugs would be getting a real workout, perhaps becoming severely compromised in some cases, hence amorous troubles and woes with keeping zero.
There is actually a ton of speculation out there about this and you can get lost in it.
I have u-tube of mine shooting 2.25" MOA which is well inside the MILSPEC of the day.
As time and funds allow, I'm trying to do better, and will post here and u-tube if I manage it.

Hi sorry, amend that 9mm to 9.5mm diameter - I'd did some double checking - It is in the technical drawing I posted.  The dimensions of the punch are correct and have to be what I have drawn, (including length)

In wouldn't mess with the crown.
I would make or find something VERY SOLID to sit over the flash-hider opening & go from there though.
Make sure you get the 2 pins out though.

More and more I'm thinking the smith removing the barrel is the best option.

I'm also considering cutting the retaining ring at the base, twisting and slipping it over the barrel then using a printed jig to get it back into form and tig welding or silver soldering.  Please, someone talk me out of this.

Here's a 5 minute prototype I designed and printed.  The actual jig would be split in half and have a cutout for the barrel then clamped together.

Very cool idea.
I did something similar one time putting a No5 back to spec. I think this probably happens more than not, considering the difficulty of removing the flash hider.

Go for it... Thumbs Up

If you are getting the barrel removed, couldn't you just take the ring off then?
