Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have a look at what's available here and to compare to what I've got. If it's got Ammonia I'll look for something less aggressive.

As an ex 34 year supervisor in the ammonia fertilizer production, I can tell you nothing eats copper or brass as good as ammonia. Fittings made of this were verboten! That being said, to neutralize ammonia (a strong base) you need an equally strong acid. Bear in mind, when you mix an acid and a base, you will have a reaction, and heat. Both can have a detrimental effect on carbon, or mild steel, if not used properly.

Sweets 7.62 is ammonia based, it’s what I used to remove copper until I discovered  Boretech Eliminator a few years back. Not supposed to leave it in the bore very long.

I used Butches Boreshine for a while but it is not nearly as effective as Eliminator.

I remember a very funny (dangerous) incident many years ago when a friend got it wrong with strong chemicals. He was treating the swimming pool with chlorine and also wanted to use an anti algae product. So to save time he decided to mix both in a plastic bucket prior to adding it to the pool! It went up like a firework and he ended up with a melted plastic ring on the terrace where the bucket used to be. We were creased up laughing so much
