I did a little more searching on the Pattern-1903 Bayonet and Scabbard last night...and I am even more confused...LOL. I saw some scabbards that had the "internal chape", like the one in the bottom of the photo. I saw one scabbard that looked like it had both an "internal throat and chape" (enclosed in the leather as opposed to stapled to the ends, I don't think I made sense there, guess had to see it). And I also saw one Pattern-1903 Bayonet with a scabbard similar to the Pattern-1907 with exposed throat and chape. I had heard that these bayonets were in limited use post First World War, so the scabbards I saw could be replacements also. I will might have a go at posting links, that might help out too.
How about this...LOL...if that Pattern-1903 Bayonet is still there the next time I have some spare cash...I will but it first and then worry about finding a scabbard...LOL. Anyway, it is fun tracking this stuff down...LOL. Mark |

This is not exactly the site I was looking for to post a link, as this is a Pattern-1888 Bayonet. However the scabbard is the version I was refering to originaly. Meanwhile, if I come across a decent link with a Pattern-1903 Bayonet and Scabbard I will try to post it. Mark |

the scabords are interchangeable with the standard P88 , as those were plentifull and in the system , by the list of changes ,
there were four diferent P1903 scabords , all had the tip discussed - internal metal with tapered leather tip , this is similar to P88 but blunter , the land pattern mkI has integral leather frog and sewn belt loop , the mkI naval pattern has exterior metal locket with almond shaperd stud that had the face checked , the second naval pattern mkII has the integral frog riveted to the body and riveted belt loop [shorter] , the mkIII naval is like the mkII but sewn rather than riveted , they were made by the bayo mfgrs -wilkinson , sanderson , enfield , mole , and there were conversions done by those as well as chapman , and ishapore ,
id love to find one for my P03 and id love to find the early P07 with that style tip for my mole P07 hooked quillon

All right, now I might know a bit more about scabbards. Maybe somebody should post another topic on the Pattern-1888 and Pattern-1903 Bayonets. I feel bad in a way because Cookie Monster started a thread on finding a Pattern-1907 Bayonet and look where it has ended up...LOL. It's my fault...LOL.

Update.
After doing some checking, I found out that the Pattern-1903 Bayonet I saw at an antique store was in fact a Pattern-1888 Bayonet. I have not been back there since to see if it was still there. However...my Girlfiend and I were at another store were I ran across another Pattern-1888 Bayonet. This time the bayonet came home with me...LOL. It is dated 1897, made by Enfield (EFD below the Broad Arrow). It cost $47 (US), in good condition, but no scabbard. So I need to look for a Pattern-1888 Scabbard and Frog, and a Lee-Metford Rifle...LOL. I was happy to find this bayonet. As of now I cannot post photos, but soon as I become capable I will post a photo. Mark |

nice grab , i think everyone should have an 88 just in case you stumble on the long lee hiding in the rack , but also because it rounds out the blade collection in that end of the spectrum

This last week has been good to me in the area of finding bayonets.
Yesterday I picked up another No4 Mk.II Spike Bayonet/ with scabbard, a Long Branch made version for $9 (US). I was looking for another Long Branch to fill a Canadian 1951-Pattern Bayonet Frog I aquired recently. I found this spike bayonet at the same place I mentioned seeing the 1888-Pattern Bayonet a while back. That 1888-Pattern Bayonet was gone when we went there yesterday, so I'm glad I got the other bayonet at another place last week. I'm still "in shock" that I have a Boer War era bayonet...LOL. Yes, I was happy to find a 1888-Pattern Bayonet, finding a Lee-Metford Rifle will be the tough part...LOL. Mark |

Oh...it gets better...LOL. My Girlfriend bought the 1888-Pattern Bayonet for me as an early birthday present. She has a tough time finding a decent gift for me at time, so she asked if I wanted it for my birthday, which is not until mid-Dec....LOL. I did not complain. Just need to keep an eye out for a scabbard and frog now...LOL.

I've been checking out this "88 LeeMetford bayo in VG condition ( without scabbard ) for $65 . Does this sound like a reasonable price ?

I am by know means any sort of expert, nor do I wish to be...LOL. From what I have seen on the internet, I am not sure where, but I saw a 1888-Pattern Bayonet being offered for $125 (US), it was in good shape (blade still bright, no major rust pitting), also without scabbard. The one I have was bought for $47 (US), also no scabbard, mine has no pitting, but the metal is dark in places (I'm really not good at "judging" conditions), I'm happy with it. So, with all my double-talk...LOL, seeing them from the $40 (US) up to over $100 (US), $65(US) does not seem too bad. I don't think I made any sense, but I tried...LOL.
